Poll question: Biennial 'Are you a latte-drinking, Volvo-driving, etc. liberal?' poll
Previous one was here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x2243738 You can check there if you're curious what the results were in December 2004, but as I'm cutting and pasting all the text from it, don't expect to see anything surprising there as regards brilliant English prose. (Hey, but the first reply was from a fictitious Cuban sockpuppet; that's something, right?:))

The complete question:
Are you a latte-drinking Volvo-driving NPR-listening Birkenstock-wearing New York Times-reading tofu-eating liberal?

Much of this, according to a Google search, turned up in a Club for Growth anti-Dean ad run in Iowa, though they're just the same old cliches people have been throwing around for years. No attack on liberals implied here (ie from me), though I had to throw in tofu-eating so I'd have something to vote for.

NPR, NYT, Saab driving, hate lattes and tofu reminds me of library paste.

9. Sorry - none.
Coffee wasn't designed to have anything added - pure espresso is the only way to go.

Don't drive.

Mostly listen to Radio 3 (B.B.C.), sometimes to Radio 4 (which I suspect would be the British equivalent).

I've no idea what a Birkenstock is.

I've been known to peruse the on-line edition...but I don't read it as a matter of habit.

I once saw how tofu is made on a television documentary...if something needs a factory, it takes a lot to get it into my mouth.

36. I don't know what to vote on!
latte-drinking
Highlander grog, if I want taste. Regular good old fashioned coffee if I want lead.

Volvo-driving
My wife does the driving-a Saturn Vue, SUV from hell. She's a conservative who votes for Clinton and Kerry. Don't ask, I don't know how to explain it.

NPR-listening
I'm convinced that NPR/PBS is one of many mega-corporations, so my trust in it is little.

Birkenstock-wearing
Just my workshoes (white)

New York Times-reading
Pretty much the same answer as "NPR-listening"

tofu-eating liberal?
There are some natural food stores that are great at making tofu taste just like egg salad. Excellent. Including the burritos (I'm gettin' hungry here...). I'm also just as happy with a steak.

I'm not sure that answers your question, but there we go.

43. I'm just a regular Joe with a regular job.
I'm your average white suburbanite slob.

I like football and porno and books about war.

I've got an average house with a nice hardwood floor.

My wife and my job, my kids and my car.

My feet on my table and a cuban cigar.

But sometimes that just ain't enough to keep a man like me interested

(oh no) no way (uh-uh)

No, I've gotta go out and have fun at someone else's expense

(oh yeah) Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

I drive really slow in the ultra-fast lane,

While people behind me are going insane.

I'm an asshole (He's an asshole, what an asshole)

I'm an asshole (He's an asshole, such an asshole)

I use public toilets and piss on the seat,

I walk around in the summertime saying "How about this heat?"

I'm an asshole (He's an asshole, what an asshole)

I'm an asshole (He's the world's biggest asshole)

Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces,

While handicapped people make handicapped faces.

I'm an asshole (He's an asshole, what an asshole)

I'm an asshole (He's a real fucking asshole)

Maybe I shouldn't be singing this song

Ranting and raving and carrying on

Maybe they're right when they tell me I'm wrong

NAAAAH!

I'm an asshole (he's an asshole, what an asshole)

I'm an asshole (he's the world's biggest asshole)

(Spoken)

Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac El Dorado,

hot-fuckin'-pink, with whaleskin hubcaps and all-leather cow interior and big

brown baby seal eyes for headlights... yeah! And I'm gonna drive around in

that baby doing 115 miles an hour, getting 1 mile per gallon, suckin' down

quarter pound cheeseburgers from McDonald's in the old-fashioned non-

biodegradable styrofoam containers... yeah! And when I'm done suckin' down

those greaseball burgers I'm gonna toss the styrofoam containers right out the

side, and there ain't a goddamn thing anybody can do about it. You know why?

Because we got the bombs, that's why... yeah! Two words--nuclear fuckin'

weapons, OK? Russia, Czechoslovakia, Romania, they can have all the democracy

they want...they can have a democracy cakewalk right through the middle of

Tienamen Square and it won't make a lick of fuckin' difference, because we got

the bombs, OK? John Wayne's not dead--he's frozen! And when we find a cure for

cancer, we're gonna thaw out the Duke and he's gonna be pretty pissed off. You

know why? You ever taken a cold shower? Well, multiply that by 15 million

times--that's how pissed off the Duke's gonna be. I'm gonna get the Duke and

John Casavetti and Sam Peckinpaw and a case of fuckin' whisky and drive...

(Hey, hey, hey, hey, you know you really are an asshole?)

Why don't you shut up and sing the song, Chris. I thought I was the

asshole... all the time it was him... what an asshole!

(Sung)

I'm an asshole (I'm an asshole, he's an asshole)

I'm an asshole (He's the world's biggest asshole)

A S-S H-O L-E

Everybody, A S-S H-O L-E

Not really, I just think the song is funny. :)

We have Pacifica Radio, which is the BEST, so who needs NPR? And I drink regular coffee. Regular organic, fair-trade, shade-grown coffee, that is. :) I guess I'm more of your tree-hugging kind of liberal than the NYTimes Reading type.

76. NPR and NYT occasionally
I like listening to NPR in the car sometimes (especially around elections), but it's usually music on the radio or my own CDs. I read the NYT occasionally, but generally online; in my area it's pretty hard to find the print edition outside of libraries. None of the other attributes apply to me, though.

...although not so much since AAR arrived in Seattle.

I don't drive a Volvo. While I try to do the NYT crossword puzzle as often as possible, it's from a reprint in a Seattle newspaper. And I will eat tofu when it is part of an Asian recipie, but don't go out of my way to include it in non-Asian meals.

Red Bull drinking, '97 Cavalier driving, grindcore/thrash-listening, Off The Wall Vans wearing, DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND reading, baby back rib-eating LIBERAL.

ALL coffee makes me gag upon smell. I wouldn't drive a Volvo if you paid me. Birkenstocks are hippy-dippy Dead-wear which just ain't my style. NYT has MoDo and Krugmann but also has pro-job-offshoring, nouveau-riche pro-whore neo-libs like Tommy Friedman. And tofu is terrible. As is ricotta, feta and goat cheese. They're all gooey and they smell like dried unwashed feet.

other traits too. Also, while I enjoyed them, I left NPR and NYT out, since I haven't endulged in a while. I have the occasional cappucino, but not latte. I've always wanted a SAAB, not a Volvo.

I read the NYT if it's around (such as the coffee shop, while I'm drinking my latte), but I don't subscribe to it or purchase it anywhere. Not that I wouldn't.

I fit more "conservative" outward stereotypes than I do the "liberal" ones, but I am liberal nonetheless.

87. Hmm... I don't know if there is a cliche for it...
Latte-Drinking

You know, I've never even had a latte once. Never once. I couldn't even tell you what the difference between "cup of coffee" and "latte" is. And no, I've not had "chai" either. Coffee is one of those things that the Flying Spaghetti Monster put on this earth to tell us that he loves us and wants us to stay up late. Messing with it is... is... sacrilegious.

Volvo-driving

I have never ridden in a Volvo, much less driven one. I imagine that the interior smells kind of like that one room at your grandmother's house that no one was allowed to go in and sit on the furniture (yet they call it a sitting room?). I categorically refuse to set foot in a vehicle that can instantaneously knock 50% off your sex appeal just by standing next to it.

NPR-listening

NPR bores the shit out of me. I keep thinking of the Schweddy Balls sketch from SNL every time I hear that soft-shoe droning, only without the humor. If I'm lucky enough to remember where it is on the dial, it's only a matter of a few minutes before I pop in a CD.

Birkenstock-wearing

I know some people will disagree, but feet tend to smell and are generally ugly. I don't want to see them. Plus, Birks are unattractive (a belt buckle on what amounts to a sandal? Yecch.) clunky-looking things. As unenamored as I am of feet, some people wear white socks with these things, which makes them look positively stupid. You just can't win with Birks.

New York Times-reading

I've always had a bit of an issue with people outside of NY reading the NYT. The NYT, I guess, is viewed as some kind of singular, geographically transcendent bastion of the non-existant "liberal media". I'm all for the ridiculously difficult crossword puzzle, but you can keep the rest of it.

tofu-eating

I'm an omnivore, and while I will eat tofu in certain circumstances (like when it comes in a nice bowl of miso soup), I don't go out of my way looking for it. Tofu is like the poster child for the idea that things that are good for you taste like cardboard or worse.

So what's my cliche?

I do read the NYT on occasion.

Tofu is okay. Not my first choice, but I'll eat it.

occasional gun-toting, cat-loving, Guardian-reading, liberal.

By the way, Birks and fast/panic heel-and-toe driving do NOT mix well, especially during a 3:00 a.m., emergency bovine-avoidance maneuvers. Trust me.
