I am very sad.

My mother in law is in her last days. She is dying of esophogeal cancer and has maybe a week or two left. She has been very dear to me, hubby and I have been married for almost 25 years and my mother in law has always been a good friend to me. I am mourning her passing more than I can express here. I am also sad because my sister has given me a 50th birthday present of a cruise- due to happen in two weeks. Of course I won't be able to go, it was for just she and I, and I have been looking forward to it all year. So I am mourning that too. My sister and I have pretty hectic lives. We lost both our parents since '98 and the stress of that and the demands of daily existence and our physical distance ( we live 4 hours apart) makes it very difficult to have quality time, or indeed, any time together. A week of lounging, and catching up, would have been bliss.
My father in law died in 2001, so this impending loss means that hubby and I will both be orphaned. All four parents in 8 years. I feel bereft. I feel old. And I am very sad.

2. Can't your sister reschedule the cruise?

I mean, after you guys get done with the funeral and all, you're going to need a rest, and there's nothing better than cruise for that. It would do you good. I'm very sorry for your impending loss. I've lost more than my fair share of loved ones, and it's never easy. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers for the next few months. I know they will not be easy.

6. No doubt about it, she would want me to go.

But I can't leave my sweetie to mourn alone. He was the rock of gibralter when I lost my parents, I need to be there for him.

But I'd make sure to see if I could reschedule it for a couple of months in the future. Because like I said, after all that her family is going to need the rest and get their mind off of everything. I'm sorry if you think I'm being insensitive. I'm not. I was just trying to think about her mental health and her spending time with her sister, which will also help her get through the tough time. Also, you can't compare my mother-in-law to other ones. She's one of the most selfless mothers I've ever met.

Apparently it is not, but even with insurance ( which she got in case of extreme weather) they make it very hard. I really needed to have this time with her. And I feel like a bad person for thinking of myself at such a time.
