Lucinda Williams
OK, this has nothing to do with politics, or maybe it does, but Sweet Jesus, is there anybody better than Lucinda Williams?

2. Not really
But I also like Iris DeMent, Nanci Griffith, Michelle Shocked, Alison Krause, Ani DiFranco, Candye Kane, and many others.

I do love me some Lucinda though. "Can't Let go" is a great song.

18. Same with the women....
But Lucinda seems to take more chances than the rest of them...

all though, Nanci sang an anti war song live at the Grand Ol Opry on her very first night on that stage about three weeks before the bombing of Iraq started....

5. She's awesome
Saw her open for Neil Young a couple of years ago...immediately went out and bought Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Great album.

6. CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD is unbelievably good.
She inherited her father's poetry gene and then some.

Awfully listenable voice, too.

For a while (maybe still?) she and Emmylou Harris were neighbors in Nashville.

Not a bad combination of talent there.

16. Hi, RetroLounge. Her father is CK Williams -- a leading American poet
-- his work appears in a lot of college anthologies -- in Poulin's anthology of American poets, etc.

Never put them together as father, daughter. Very cool.

Thanks

13. The first song of hers I heard was on the soundtrack to "Niagara, Niagara"
(if you haven't seen the movie, make every effort to do so, but it's only around on VHS and is out of print at this time, very cool dark love story/coming of age/comedy/tragedy type story).

The movie had one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard, and her song "Sharp Cutting Wings (Song To A Poet)" was one of the best songs on it.

21. I can think of one
Ms. Williams blows me into the weeds — dog, I love "Righteously" — but I can't think of anyone right now who tops Mary Gauthier (pronounced "go-shay").

Check out "Mercy Now," "I Drink" and "Your Sister Cried."

27. Thanks, Oeditpus Rex.
You've made me a Mary Gauthier fan. For life.

"Mercy Now" blew me away. Beautiful song, great video. I wonder why I've never heard of her before.. has she been "Dixie Chicked"?

28. She's not mainstream
Major labels won't touch her, at least not for mass distribution. Nor will Clear Channel.

Gotta listen to stations like KPIG to hear the best stuff.

Btw — I was an instant fan, too, when my friend turned me on to her.

29. Yeah, artists like her are usually not mainstream.
And it's no coincidence that I almost always like them instantly as well.

Reminds me of the first time I heard Gillian Welch. BAM!! Knocked me out.

There is a station here in NYC that will play Mary if they know about her. WFUV.. I'll have to let them know.

There are some I would say I like equally, for their music: from The Decemberists to The Veronicas to Anna Nalick to Thea Gilmore to the Barenaked Ladies to The Dixie Chicks.

34. IMO..
Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, Loretta Lynn, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, and Dinah Washington rank among the best - but I'm not sure I like their styles MORE than Lucinda's.
