2. Other...the ability to subscribe to Netflix
Other than that...its just an obvious advance in technology.

3. Widescreen, widescreen, widescreen!
It was always hard to get a videotape that hadn't been cropped or, worse, pan & scanned. I want to see the entire movie, the way the director intended it to be seen!

I still think my laserdiscs have slightly better sound quality, but the DVD picture is even better than LD.

4. A funny story
I'm the techie in my family. My mother, sister and niece all live together. They purchased their first DVD player a few years ago, and I received a frantic call from them because SOMETHING WAS WRONG! Could I come over and take a look?

I did, and they played the DVD and I said..."Uh, what's wrong?"

You know it's coming.

"What are those black bars on the screen????"

I told them it's supposed to be like that.

I'm pretty sure they exchanged the DVD for a (ugh) full-screen version the next day.

And the worst thing is they have a very nice TV, it's huge, S-video and composite video inputs, and I'm stuck with a crappy 20 inch JVC.
