Lesotho, I think, is what gave the SA apartheid regime the idea for its bantustan policy.

10. It's actually a more truly independent country than the Bantustans were...

though it _is_ completely surrounded by South Africa. Unlike the Bantustans it still exists today after the end of apartheid, and I'm pretty sure it predates apartheid as well. I believe it's centered around a higher plateau or in some similar way geographically separated from the surrounding South African territory.

3. Lesotho has fantastic dinosaurs

Specifically early ornithischians. Ornithischian dinosaurs are the group that include horned dinosaurs (ceratopsians), armored dinosaurs (ankylosaurs), plated dinosaurs (stegosaurs), boneheads (pachycephalosaurs), and duckbills (hadrosaurs and other ornithopods).

Lesothosaurus diagnosticus is from there (duh) and is the most primitive ornithischian with good skeletal material.



Heterodontosaurus tucki is from there and South Africa, and is known from many gorgeous specimens. H. appears to be at the base of the group that gave us horned and bone headed dinosaurs.

6. Southern Africa

has tremendous Permian, Triassic and Early Jurassic exposures. Mammal ancestors, archosaur (crocodiles, dinosaurs, birds, pterosaurs) ancestors and whatnot. The Karoo basin in South Africa ia actually the most famous locality of mammal ancestors in the world.
