What is your favourite movie musical?
Mine is 'Oklahoma!' Also, it's my favourite stage musical!

I'm watching 'The Music Man' on TV right now...this is a great movie musical, too.

What's yours?

:-)

31. I liked "South Pacific", but oy vey. The colors in that film...
The lighting they used in "South Pacific"...the film version, that is. Those colors were very jarring at times. Otherwise, I liked "South Pacific", also.

Oh. Several years ago, I met Mitzi Gaynor at a gay bar during Pride Week. She's still lovely. :-)

P.S. The special lighting effects used on stage didn't translate too well to the film, Lootellan.

3. Porgy and Bess
but you never get to see it.

There was a version on the air from Britain some years ago, I think, but there is some sort of problem with the Gershwin (?) estate.

"Bess, you is my woman now..."

What a great and powerful work of art.

Edited on Sun Dec-21-03 11:41 PM by CMT
I think it has one of the best and most rousing scores of any movie musical. I also love "The Music Man".

Some of the great MGM musicals:
Singin in the Rain
The Band Wagon
Meet Me in St. Louis
An American in Paris
Easter Parade

Also...
Holiday Inn
High Society
Hello Dolly (Babs was too young, but she is still wonderful in it)
Mary Poppins
Its a Hard Days Night

I loved how Dr. Evil in the last Austin Powers movie sampled, "It's a Hard Knock Life" in a rap he did in prison. That rawked.

On stage, I would have to say it's "Barnum," but that's just because I juggled and unicycled in a production of it.

WAIT! I FORGOT, "POPEYE!" That's way better than "Annie!"

47. Yes, "Funny Girl" is fantastic
That ending, where she sings "My Man", gets me choked up every time. I thought "Funny Lady" was ok; nowhere near the standards of "Girl", though.

Other Favorites;

Showboat
Oklahoma
The Music Man (I really liked the Matthew Broderick version)
Chicago
Meet Me in St. Louis
A Star is Born (Judy Garland)
New York, New York (not a traditional musical but Liza'a performances are awesome)

The Disney animated musicals are terrific also, my favorite being "Beauty and the Beast".

Favorite musicals on stage were "Annie" (first I ever saw) and "The Pirates of Penzance" (lot's of fun, beautiful music, a gorgeous Kevin Kline and Rex Smith, complete with a homoerotic subtext)

For a really great double feature of "So bad they're fun" musicals, try "Xanadu" and "Can't Stop the Music"

That scene STIll gives me goosebumps when I watch it. Just incredible.

I liked "Oklahoma!" very much. The movie version, though. I sort of liked the Hugh Jackman version (I was surprised as to how well he could sing).

I also sort of liked the film version of "Flower Drum Song". I think I'm the only one who does, though.

Yes..."Xanadu" and "Can't Stop the Music" are a great double feature!

21. Jesus Christ, Superstar
There is just one thing which I don't understand
Why'd you chose such a backward time in such a strange land?
If you'd come today you could have reached the whole nation
Isreal in Four Bee See had no mass communication
Don't you get me wrong
I only want to know

Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you, what have you sacrificed?

Jesus Christ, Superstar
Are you the one who they say you are?

Tell me what you think about your friends at the top
Who do you think beside yourself's the pick of the crop?
Buhda, was he where it's at, is he where you are?
Could Mohamed move a mountain or was that just Pee Are?
Did you all mean to die like that, was that a mistake or
Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?
Don't you get me wrong
I only want to know

Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you, what have you sacrificed?

Jesus Christ, Superstar
Are you the one who they say you are?
