Please post puppy house training stories and advice
I would like to get a yellow lab, but I have never raised a dog from a pup as an adult and want some advice and fair warning. Thanks.

2. Use lots of praise when house training
Be sure to take your puppy out to the yard after he/she eats, wakes up from a nap, or after running around and playing, and before you settle in for the night. When the puppy pees, or poops, give the puppy lots of praise. The trick is to be attentive to the "signs". Usually when the puppy puts his nose to the ground and starts sniffing around, they need to go out immediately :-).

It's okay to catch your pup midstream or when starting to squat in the house. Yell "No!" loudly, then pick the pup up and carry him outside to finish his business. Praise him when he does.

If you haven't already read this book, please read "How to be your dog's best friend", by the Monks of New Skete.

Good luck and have fun :-).

3. Thanks!
I've been dying to get a dog for years. We had a great lab when I was a kid. Now that I have been married for a few years, and my schedule much more consistent as a result, I figured now would be a good time. :hi:

6. My story.
I never had to house train my three pups nor did I have to train the three adult dogs that had NEVER been allowed in a house. The pups did poo and pee in the house. Their mom did her job and cleaned up after them if I didn't get to it first. At some point Angel decided she wasn't going to do it any longer and started biting them on the nose if they pooped or peed in the house. I haven't had any problem since.
The interesting thing is NONE of the three adult dogs I adopted had ever even been inside a house. They seemed to know it was their "den" and that I would let them out when they wanted. The old male had some trouble with "marking his territory" but I swatted him on the butt with a newspaper every time he did it and he learned. The funniest incident was when he "marked" the box fan that was running on the floor. Yes, he tried to pee into the wind.

This is Angel and her pups. (sorry about the quality of the picture)
