Wow--I took a little 6 month break from DU and thought I'd see whats going on today--and it took me a good 20 minutes just to read all the new rules, laws, violations. etc... what's up with that?!
Anyway, How is everyone doing?

4. just part of a wider trend. People just love draconian restrictions

The expanded Patriot Act passed by a landslide in the house, voice vote in the Senate.

I have seen some mesage boards forbid any criticism of anything done by "the troops."

People just love being told what to do, what to say, and what to think. It is an immensely popular movement! The more labyrinthine and more repressive, the better!

The only message board I know of that has not jumped onto the bandwagon is the Global Conflict Board. I would post a link to it, but I am sure it probably violates some rule or other, and probably violates the Patriot Act too!

I think it is a combination of things, if your every word and deed is mandated for you, it is easier to justify your failure to do anything about things that you are uncomfortable with.

This came up in a roundabout way on another thread, talking about why people enjoy FoxNews so much, and take such comfort in denial, when every day, if you venture away from the CrusadeNets, there are new reports of yet another load of atrocities being committed in their name, with their money.

And there is an alarming number who don't consider things to be atrocities, depending on which ethnic/religious/economic group are the victims.

People are not able to completely blot out what they have become, and seek refuge in a stern micromanaging authority, that will absolve them of any personal responsibility and take the edge off the resultant self-loathing.
