I tracked those "curly-q" contrails this AM! Another plane involved, too!
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 11:14 AM by Gloria
I was walking the dog about 8:40 MT here in Las Cruces and I looked up and saw the thing going approx. West to East. I saw it unfolding...the curly-q's coming out of the main stream. The plane headed over the Organ Mountains, descending, either to White Sands Missile range or to Holloman AF Base which is 50 miles from here...you drive through the WS range to get to it.

Then something really interesting happened. As the plane was heading toward the mountains, I saw ANOTHER plane, this time visible, light reflecting off it, also flying over the mountains, but in the opposite direction, like it was going to meet the mystery plane. Unlike the mystery plane, its contrail was very short and straight and faded quickly.

This plane then flew parallel and above (from my viewpoint) the mystery contrail...It flew right along side it, it's whole length, out toward the West!!!
By this time the mystery contrail was turning into a flat configuration in the area where it had first been laid out as the mystery plane flew in from the West.
Weird!!!!

2. No, it was going in the OPPOSITE direction
and it was a distance away from the trail it was following....about a thumb's length ABOVE the original trail from my angle.

Hope that helps.

8. My guess as well..............
BartCop has them posted on his site, well they were yesterday anyway. The prevailing explanation was the Aurora.

5. You might be seeing Burt Rutans "SpaceShipOne" tests
Here's a link:

http://www.scaled.com/projects/tierone/index.htm

In short, this is a privately funded project to win the "X-Prize", a 10 million dollar award for the first privately funded team to launch 3 people into space (at least 60 miles up), then redo it within 2 weeks.

The purpose is to promote the expansion of non-government funded activies in space.

Scaled Composites (Burt Rutans company) is currently the front runner in the competition. Within the last few days they made their first powered flight, and succeeded in becoming the first non-government funded aircraft to break the speed of sound.

It's an exciting project, and if that's what you are seeing you have a front row seat on history being made. Many people are equating these events with the Wright Brothers first flight at the beginning of the last century.

Or, it could be UFOs. Either way, pretty cool. :)

6. I'm not sure
...I'd know the difference between Scaled Composites' stuff and something from Pluto. Pretty far-out designs! :)

7. I've been noticing stories about these
contrails for quite some time now, but I'd never witnessed it - until yesterday and I am outside every single day walking the dog. It has been very windy at ground level with colder and drier weather than normal, so maybe that's the reason. Anyway, after I saw a normal-looking contrail in the process of forming, I went inside for a while. About an hour later I came outside to check the mail and there, in the same location, was a very broad and long and thin "cloud." Not only that, but there were other long contrail clouds, criss-crossing, all in different directions. The sky, on an otherwise very sunny day, started to take on almost a cloudy appearance because of them. Some kind of weather phenomenon that doesn't allow the contrails to evaporate normally combined with near 0 wind speed at flying altitude maybe?

10. nothing to see here.. just some chemtrails..
see them all the time here in LoCal, usually on Saturdays. I'm surprised you haven't seen them before, as New Mexico is a notorious area for these sightings.

11. We get them over No Central FL
At least once a month. The first time I noticed them was a few years ago before I had started to hear all the stories. It was so odd that I pointed it out to my husband and I remember telling that I didn't think I had ever seen anything like that before. Then at we met a friend for lunch who asked us if we had noticed the sky, and I said that's funny because we were just talking about it. He told us he was reading a lot about it on the internet and was a little freaked out as to what was going on.

So far the best explaination I've heard is that it might be the gov seeding the sky to create rain clouds in order to make sure US farmers avoid drought conditions but who knows.
