However, I also think it's fake (as does Snopes). It's hard to imagine anybody having that happen, then letting a close-up picture taken.

5. I have a friend who was bitten by one of those buggers..

...nearly lost his leg. And he's a top HS swimmer in Oregon too.
Very, very scary stuff.
