How is Spanish food?
We're going to Spain in a few days and I was wondering about the food. People have told me it's not very good but they may just be picky. What are some good things that don't involve mammal meat. We love chicken and seafood.

1. Paella
You MUST try a good paella, which can be made with chicken or seafood, but is best with seafood, especially mussels. If you like rice with saffron, paella is for you.

You can also get good calamares (squid) and shrimp. If you order a tortilla, keep in mind that Spanish tortillas are potato and egg based casseroles. They are delicious!

One more thing: If you find a street vendor selling churros, you MUST try them. They are 1000% better than the Americanized variety. :9

I am jealous! I lived in Spain many years ago and miss it. I want to go back. :-)

5. Sometimes
When they do, it's chorizo. Make sure you investigate the ingredients before ordering.

Paellas vary widely because of their endless varieties of recipes - so if you've had one, you have had not had them all. :-)

8. No, not all...
It seems that it is a family preference what goes into it.

I stayed with a family for a couple of weeks in Spain. They had a special pan just for paella. It covered four burners. If memory serves, my host only used a variety of seafoods and chicken.

TRY READING COMPREHENSION, YOU SEXIST PRIG.

What I said was, was that flamenco dancers really aren't shit unless they pump their undulating bellies full of steroids, and then draw lipstick on old Franco posters. You poser fuck.

If you had read my post, you would KNOW that fascist apologists like you favor replacing wine corks in Spain with dried almonds and spit. This paradigm is lost, however, on the Falangists who insist on stuffing churros in their anal orifice, like you.

I'm just not seeing why you are here at a Democratic website, when it's so clear that your true agenda is not just the annihilation of the Jewish race, but a complete replacement of Christian America with a Ba'al worshiping Akkadian-styled fascist theocratic patristic aristrocratic homosexual plutocratic autocracy.

Perhaps you can take your cat-hunting agenda to a website where your ideology will fit better.

Good luck in prison, by the way.

And as always, I remain, faithfully yours,

Try some of the seafood, chicken, or vegetarian tapas. Dive into tapas. Hop from bar to bar and pick what looks good at the counter.

Seafood paella can also be just incredible. Cafe Bango on Paseo del Prado in Madrid sometimes has the most incredible menu del dia where you can get an appetizer, seafood paella, a dessert, and a half bottle of wine for a great price. Cafe Bango, of course, is not alone.

Sevilla had the best tapas I have ever had in the Triana neighborhood across the river, but the food all over Sevilla was terrific. I'd tell you about my favorite jamon iberico spots, but you don't want that.

Granada, Cordoba, Ronda - just all wonderful experiences, gustatory and otherwise.

I haven't been around the rest of the country, sad to say, but I'm sure others here will fill you in.

Happy eating. And you will love the fruits and fruit juices.

The dry white sherries of Andalusia are unbeatable, particularly Montilla, which the proud Cordobans will tell you never leaves you with a hangover. And the wines in general will blow you away: so good. Spanish brandies are also good sipping.

Her nephew worked for my Dad for the 3 years we were there, and he used to take us on tours, with samples, of course. When I can find it, I get Osborne sherry, just because the smell alone evokes a strong spectrum of memories from the entire place.

33. Those are the two cities we visited!! You will have GREAT food there.
Madrid has incredible tapas. And Barcelona is right on the coast so you'll find tons of fresh and delicious seafood. Don't don't miss the big open market (Boqueria). Besides being just an amazing thing to see, you can pick up tons of fresh and delicious food to take with you for picnic lunches. It was just outside that market that we stumbled across a little place that serves churros con chocolate that will make your eyes roll into the back of your head.

Rick Steves has books on Spain that have really good advice. We were really pleased with all the recommendations we got from him.

58. I left there in December of 1978
Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 11:54 AM by ZombyWoof
We moved to that neighborhood in June of 1976. I imagine I would not recognize much of it at all, lol. I used to deliver the Stars & Stripes newspaper to the other Americans (at the time, this included defense contractors' families as well as the military) scattered all over the neighborhood. I rode my bicycle for miles each day after school (DGF) to deliver them. I'd probably recognize the street names and many of the houses, and not much else.

We lived in a duplex on Bergantin, just around the corner from Star. Heading towards Clipper, we were on the right side of the street, in the right-side house of the duplex.

I used to caddy for my Dad at the 9-hole (has it expanded?) golf course there... in the shadow of the Casa Grande. Used to walk to the beach all the time. I still have my collection of shark's teeth from all my combing expeditions. We (very luckily I believe) had no TV then (even with a transformer, American TV's did not last but for a few weeks with their electricity), so I was either reading or biking or hiking the beach. Great times, great memories.

"Almejas al la Marinera" are clams in a wonderful garlicky broth

Angulas are some strange tiny river eel which are seasonal yet delicious.

It is too late at night for me to pontificate as to the wonders of Spanish food. It is a cuisine unto itself, and has so many regional varieties.

29. Eat your way around that place, G! Hope you like fish though
I do not eat much fish. However I ate it every day over there, sometimes twice.

Rule of the day: if the fish is hake (aka Merluca) order it no matter how it is prepared. Best Fish Evah!

You will see veggies in season. We were there in the spring and fresh asparagus and artichoke hearts were everywhere.

Enjoy gazpacho in its many glorious variations, it will taste different.

Spanish food is more continental than you would expect and absolutely nothing like Mexican food except for the liberal use of garlic.

Expect a fried egg on your combinata plata dish if you order those. We cracked up over the ubiquitous fried egg.

The del dio is great for a long Spanish lunch: by law it must include wine or water, salad or soup, entree with a veg and dessert or fruit.

Oh yeah: a sandwich is meat/cheese/whatever between two slices of square sliced bread. Bocadilla is the same stuff between two slices of crusty European style bread. Go for the bocadilla.

If you go to Granada and visit the Alhambra, try to eat lunch at the old Convent now a parador(hotel) in the middle of the complex. Have the almond soup (aka white gazpacho)...heavenly. We spent an entire day roaming the Alhambra on our own and it was a memorable and wonderful day..

in Madrid, be sure to check out La Botin. Everyone knows where it is, PM me if you want the exact address, which I have around here somewhere, fresh roasted suckling pig, lamb or roasted chicken with the freshest of what ever veg is in season. The oldest continuously operating in one location restaurant in Europe.
Got to go to work now.

32. Whoever told you it was bad is missing a few tastebuds. Tapas? Churros con
chocolate (sp?)? Paella? Spanish food rocks! Granted, if you don't eat pork you'll be missing out on a big part of the food culture there (considering that Madrid actually has a chain of restaurants called "Museo del Jamon"). But there are an incredible array of chicken, seafood and vegetarian dishes that will knock your socks off.

Paella was obviously mentioned several times, as was tapas. I could live off the Queso de Cabra spread on garlicky toast. YUM!

The first night we were in Madrid, we wandered around looking for a place to have dinner. We knew to wait until at least 9:oo p.m. and to look for a place that was filled with locals. When we did, we were treated so well. They were very kind and sat us down to a meal several different courses, each more delicious than the last. The entire meal cost us about 16 bucks, too. This was in 1997, before the EU, so that may be different now.

They really don't speak proper Spanish like Americans do so your going to have to be patient.

They cut their cocaine wayyy too much so be prepared to snort a sifter or bring your own.

Check the hookers for penises (unless your into that kinda thing)

Remember if it has a mustache it's a woman clean shaven guy.

I don't recall much about the food except everything even the eggs have mussels in them and some wimpy watery red sauce.

And last but not least not all Brits there are organized crime figures on the run from the mob..... just most of them.

Hope this helps.

49. Jamon serrano (spanish ham)
It is just about my favorite food. It runs about $30 bucks a pound here. They cut it thin like proscutto but it is a little less salty and a little nutty flavor. It melts in your mouth.

Wrap a fresh fig in a slice. OMG.

I am a big fan of other Spanish dishes also. Torillas, mmmmm

51. It's excellent but not spicey
setting aside the hijacked part of this thread, no one has pointed this out. There is no fiery cuisine there. It's just very flavorful. There's plenty of seafood and chicken, but you'll have to get past all ham on the menu first.

56. how long are you going for ?
is it for school , visiting family or friends, or just a regular vacation ? whatever it is , it should be fun. i want to go to Spain or anywhere. just to be in another place is an interesting experience for me. i went to the UK a few years ago just for the weekend for a wedding. didn't really go anywhere other than the wedding but just being in a different country was nice.

hope you have a good time. would love to hear about it when you get back.
