Can anyone suggest a good book about Watergate?
Last time, I asked for suggestions about books on Vietnam. I ended up getting 2, and they are both exactly what I wanted--Vietnam, by Karnow; and A Bright Shining Lie, by Sheehan.

Now I'd like to know if any of you has a suggestion for a good history of Watergate. Thanks.

1. All The President's Men - Woodward and Bernstein
Why not read the book that started it all.

4. This one
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0684813238/qid=1071861901/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_2/002-1866232-9315243

It's a very thorough book, that really tries to reveal just what a tangled web it was.

7. Just ordered it. Looks like exactly what I wanted. Thanks.
All the President's Men doesn't go into enough detail about how deeply the scandal actually went. But, I agree, it's a great book, and thanks for the suggestions.

11. Glad to help
Don't be too frightened by the size of this book. Emery is a very good writer, and is able to turn this into the gripping stranger-than-fiction story that it is. He combines analysis with a detailed re-telling of the crimes committed, and it's hard to put down.

Enjoy!

5. Viet Nam - You really should read Daniel Ellsberg's
"Secrets" for the politics behind the war.

6. The second volume of Stephen Ambrose's biography of Nixon
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 02:33 PM by Parrcrow
Its an extremely good three volume bio. Volume two covers the watergate period.

While I agree that "All the President's Men" is very good, it was written during the crisis itself and therefore lacks historical perspective.

Read both of them.

Actually Woodward and Bernstien wrote a follow up book called "The Final Days" as well.

Uh oh; that's five books now.

8. I haven't read it yet, so maybe I shouldn't, but

I just picked up a used copy of Secret Agenda: Watergate, Deep Throat and the CIA by Jim Hougan.

The CIA had its own agenda, and it had nothing to do with bugging Nixon's opponents.

10. Daniel Schorr also hosted a documentary
Its a little sparce but provides a good linear overview. Its about 4 and 1/2 hours long.
