I did try something in that picture that I had not done before. In the photo I worked from, areas of her face that were in the direct sunlight were very bright, so I left those areas completely unshaded. Previously I had only done this with nsma's picture, where she was wearing a white shirt.

In other pictures, I had always shaded a solid fill over the whole picture with very light shade and then darkened up areas as necessary. It is easier to shade from dark pencil to light pencil than it is to shade from dark pencil to no pencil. But the increased contrast that this afforded did result in a superior drawing, I think.

Another thing I had tried to do is get away from outlines. I strive for a photographic effect in my drawings. I think I am improving every time.

The hard pencil marks remind me a little of Victorian etchings. I marvel at how artists are able to achieve a three-dimensional look with such hard tools - I have to use a very soft pencil to achieve the effect I strive for.
