21. And how much did George pay for them...

... I seem to recall George Steinbrenner being one, if not THE innovator of "buy a pennant at any cost" while being convicted for lying in a court of law.

tsk, tsk....... what's next? supporting the liar in the White House just to say "We won!"?

24. Don't disturb their "We're the Little Underdog" fantasy with that fact
They cherish it too much.

The fact is that the Sox should have bought some relief pitching before thwe trade deadline, but didn't. The other fact is that the Yankees have kept up with the Sox all season without two of their premier hitters (Matsui and Sheffield). These are uncomfortable facts for the Red Sox nation, so they'll tend to fall back into their usual inanities, as if everybody in professional baseball isn't trying to "buy a pennant." Last I remember, the players are paid, so everyone is essentially "buying a pennant." Too bad the Red Sox market can't support the highest payroll, and has to settle for the SECOND highest payroll. And too bad the Red Sox front office refused to even use that to best advantage, doingh jack shit before the trade deadline to strengthen the team. One wonders whether they do such things on purpose, knowing that the demented Red Sox nation loves to lose, and so they make the team lose to keep their fans happy...

Um, John Sterling, no? Mom and Repuke Stepdad, major Yankee fans, always turn the radio off before he can say it and grate on their nerves!

Actually it'd be interesting to have Jerry Springer as a manager. Billy Martin, eat your heart out! :spank:

23. Is this another late season collapse for the Bosox?
It looks like it just about now. And for all the Red Sox fans claiming that their team "sucks" this year, y'all were singing a different tune as recently as 40 days ago. Essentially, the Yankees have covered a nine game spread in 40 days, from being 3 1/2 back, to being 5 1/2 up. And this latest Fenway catastrophe may even eliminate the Sox from the post-season. We shall see. Maybe another miraculous comeback, a la 2004, is in the works. But the disgrace at Fenway this weekend argues against it.

Short version: in this series, the Sox were plain old out-managed. Last night's loss is the best example. Ortiz hits an unlikely double in the bottom of the ninth. Walk Manny, obviously. Then a bunt from Youklis, but Youklis has never laid down a sacrifice in the majors, and this one was unsuccessful. Mariano throws a wild pitch, and it's second and third. What to do? Walk a runner, bring the infield in, and let Mariano be Mariano. Strike Out: Two outs. There's no way this game shouldn't be over already, but it isn't. Next batter hits an easy comebacker, and we're done. Yanks go up three in the top of the tenth, and the Sox fall apart again. Finis.

What was amazing through the middle of the season was the Yankees ability to stay close to the Red Sox, even without two of their premier hitters (Matsui and Sheffield). Even playing weakened, the Yankees kept pace. So what happens at the trade deadline: the Yankees grab up a hitter (Abreu), while Boston does nothing. Nothing! Nothing to prop up its flagging bullpen. Nothing to supplement the 7, 8, and 9 spots. Nothing.

And are the fans surprised that the Sox are now in a position where winning an August game is make or break, perhaps the whole season, and certainly any dignity, wrapped up in a Monday afternoon game, trying desperately to avoid a five-game home sweep by their arch-rivals and division leaders, where a loss may truly remove them from even the wild-card race? I'm glad I'm a Yankee supporter here. I'd be pretty pissed if I was a Red Sox fan...

26. out managed??
Edited on Mon Aug-21-06 01:33 PM by Pirate looks at 50
i would have to disagree with the concept of joe torre outmanaging anyone this weekend. both teams pitchers sucked (except for randy johnson)were horrible, both had trouble holding leads. the difference was that the sox could not score with runners in scoring position.

oh and btw, remember there are four games in september.

And if the Sox sweep the Yankees in the Stadium this time, I'll donate $20 to DU on your behalf.

Outmanaged is correct. The reason the Red Sox couldn't score is because Torre handled there threats well.

On edit: My bad...one is a double header = four games. ;-)
