18. Not when they crack, especially
:o

Had that happen to a classmate of mine...ouch.

The one I first used is very thick and large (yes, I am talking about the cup :eyes: ) but it got in the way at times, so I switched to the more typical kind. If nothing else, they fend off glancing blows (no innuendo intended) and keep everything contained (not to put too fine a point on it, they remove the 'speed bag' effect presented by dangling participles).

In recent years I've hardly ever used them at all, even in some pretty hot and heavy sparring sessions...my blocks and parries (and footwork, most importantly of all) are pretty strong by now and I just don't like wearing sparring gear at all (and gloves, even open-handed ones, limit a huge portion of most kung fu styles' techniques). I hate -- absolutely detest -- martial arts headgear, though I've only worn the stupid things a few times...you get hit and it still hurts and, not only that, you end up with the helmet twisted around so the face opening is over your left ear.

20. My school's insurance has forced everyone to wear insane amounts of foam.
Full foot & hand pads, shin, forearm, chest, full headgear (with those stupid shields), etc.

Fortunately, as a blackbelt, I can skirt by with my open cloth hand pads & shin pads and a sports bra with armor. In competition, I'll throw in the mouthguard. I hate wearing more gear than that. It just gets in the way.

25. I'm sorry you have to endure that
but at least you're managing to still travel light. :D

In the kung fu schools I've spent most time in, we did a ton of body conditioning (I mean hitting each other and ourselves, with hands, feet, and rattan sticks, on the arms, back, kidney area, abdominals, chest, throat, face, and legs) and it really is incredible how that can, over time, not only reduce the impact of a blow but -- more importantly -- help get you enough used to the idea of being hit that it's less of a shock (important, because the shock of being hit is really what throws a lot of people, on the street or elsewhere, and makes them the victim...I know it was that way for me when I was first getting smacked around). I never got into tournaments -- I trained for them alongside my classmates, and learned some valuable stuff, but the whole idea of competing just wasn't for me and I was happy with our in-class training bouts and the usual non-tournament-oriented fighting that we did -- so I rarely had cause to wear all those annoying pads and only in certain fighting sessions did I feel the need to slip a mouthguard in. Helmets are the worst, though, and I'm so happy I only wore them a couple of brief times...I mean, do we really need to be any hotter and sweatier? And when we put on the body (torso) shields it meant that we were going to be doing some all-out full-contact training (not sparring: one student puts on the shield and everyone else lines up to do a technique or combination and then, when the line's finished, the next person gets to get the sh** kicked and smacked out of them, and so on.. :D ), in which case we usually got more beaten up then we ever did, without protective gear, in the more typical controlled-contact sparring we did.

It's good stuff, isn't it? :-)

I'm 105lbs of pure joy! Actually, my mom once described me as having deadly little fists of fury. My sister described me as inhuman. I'm very peaceful actually, until you get me into a karate ring. Oh yeah, and I prefer much bigger opponents and short of something needing real medical attention, I will not feel pain, until the fight is through.

52. Bar fights.
Like I grew up in a small town and had a rather mouthy cousin who constantly brought my name into every fight of hers. No choice in the matter.

Cornfields-that's where we partied in high school. Those fights were usually because they singled out two of my male friends just because they were gay. I learned at a young age that some small town men have no problems smacking a woman around if she tells them to stop picking on someone. I also learned that a swift kick to the groin put an end to any further slaps.

47. Just a hair shy of 5 ft.
But not so petite anymore. I used to prefer to fight with boys because girls were "wimpy". I have 5 brothers and believe me, we fought a LOT (that's what having 6 Irish hair trigger tempers will do, 3 red heads, 2 strawberry blondes, and me, the "dark" irish one with reddish browm hair), so i never got the whole hair pulling scratching thing(now grabbing so the person won't dodge a punch is another story). The knock down, drag out fights we used to get in were legendary in the neighborhood we grew up in. But anyone who thought they could talk about any of us or, god forbid, fight just one of us, was in for a BIG surprise. Family always came first.

I actually HAVE learned to control my temper now. For the most part.
