4. Well, according to the lady at the shelter.
They have a lot of lab mixes and two chihuahas that came in yesterday.

She told us to bring our dog with us so *she* could actually help pick out the new puppy.

Our dog is really friendly, but I want to make sure it is a good match for her.

5. Good idea
let the dogs run loose together though. If they are kept on leashes or otherwise contained you won't get them to bond or be aggressive and that's how you can tell if they will work it out.

6. Adopting From An Animal Shelter?
Our local government-run animal shelter won't allow "same-day" adoptions. They require a home visit from one of the shelter's home-placement staff. They also require that every at-home family member come to the shelter to meet the new adoptee before they release the animal.

I asked why they have such a complicated process, and was told that by being "thorough" (not complicated) it helps to eliminate those who are acting impulsively, but aren't really ready for a 12-17 year commitment. It also prevents situations where one parent brings home an animal for the kids, only to discover that the OTHER parent thinks it's a horrible idea, or that the kids have already lost interest (even though LAST week the kids wouldn't shut-up about getting a puppy, they've already moved on to something ELSE to be obsessed with.)

Anyway... I hope you find the perfect match!! Pets are a wonderful addition to a family. Ours certainly brings us many hours of laughter and joy.

Do you have other pets at home?

7. I was kind of surprised myself because we went looking last
week at this woman who had rescued dogs, but we thought they wouldn't be a good fit for our dog.

We have an adorable little dachshund named "Chessie" who has brought us so much love, but I think she gets a little lonely when there isn't anyone home except me. She wants to sit on my lap while I'm working and I'm on the phone a lot, so it just isn't a good idea.

I hope we can find a good match for her, and for us, obviously.
