Good King went for slaw one night: So mondegreen
12/18/03

'Bjorn is the king of Israel' doesn't quite capture the season
Welcome to the fifth edition of Christmas mondegreens, that celebration of holiday ear confusion readers seem to enjoy every December.

Mondegreens, for the uninitiated, are misheard song lyrics people think are correct, until they embarrass themselves by singing them in public.
Why are there so many fractured Christmas carol lyrics? Maybe it's because carols are songs you learn as a child, when your vocabulary is not as sophisticated as it later becomes. Or perhaps it's because so many carols use antiquated language that's hard for modern folk to understand.

<snip>
"Away in a Manger": In past years readers have suggested "the cattle were blowing the baby away" and "the little Lord Jesus was eating the hay." This year, the "cattle were glowing." Of course, the correct lyric is "the cattle are lowing" and "the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay." And carolers should be singing, "no crib for a bed," not "no creep in the bed," as one youngster sang.

much more...
