Yet more sexist claptrap on women's brains
From today's SF Sunday Chronicle:
A few neurological differences between women and men from Louann Brizendine's "The Female Brain":

Thoughts about sex enter women's brains once every couple of days; for men, thoughts about sex occur every minute.

That confirms what I've suspected all along: I'm a man.

I'm certainly willing to listen to the evidence that there are differences in how men and women are wired. But when I read stuff like this my brain screeches to a halt.

2. Yes, for the most part
which is why I went "Erp!" when I read that!

What bothers me is that the medical evidence is presented outside of cultural and economic context. I believe those must ALWAYS be considered. There is a very strong swing towards explaining everything away with genetics. It's reached the point where I believe that it often serves as a cop-out: no need to change anything, we're wired that way!

3. That's why they're studying African Americans, Latinas, and gays
in the next round.

But yeah, thinking about sex once every few days? Who the hell did they poll for THAT conclusion?

in the next round of study.

As far as "once every few days" goes, that's just BIZARRE.

7. Exactly!!
It is a cop-out, and hides a conservative agenda as described by your last sentence: no need to change anything, we're wired that way!

I've noticed for awhile that those fondest of the "hardwired" view of human behavior are male. I believe that is simply because men are far more baffled than women by the emotional roots of their own behavior. It's a relief to many men to believe they have little control over their actions. Also, at least occasionally, it's a handy excuse (don't put my cloths in the hamper? Sorry, it's hardwired!)

6. I would think that thinking about sex once a minute wouldn't be good
How does such a person concentrate on anything, have the ability to make good decisions, or do anything that requires complex thinking. If if one could manage under those circumstances, think about how much better they would be able to do those things if they weren't handicapped by that obsession.
For me, it depended on my circumstances. When I was single, I thought about sex more often. Now that I can count on getting it often, I don't think about it as often. Since my mid to late teens, I have always been between the two extremes though.

8. Actually, at least in my case, thoughts about sex and thoughts about
everything else coexist nicely. I can concentrate on complex tasks while still thinking about sex. I'm not sure how it happened, but there you go. :D

10. Well done. ;-)
Thinking about sex stimulates the adrenaline and your hormones,
so it sharpens your mind while keeping you young.

Everybody needs to be at least flirted with every day to enjoy optimum health.

I'm in my 50s, and aquired a young b/f who brought me up to date on things I'd forgotten, and my menopause disappeared and my health improved. But now I get abominable once a month and have to pig out on chocolate each time to cure it. ;-)

Actually, I'm still waiting for people to realize that being predictably revolting for a day or two each month is far better than being unpreditably revolting all month long.

11. It's a proven fact that women are far dumber than men.
After all, men have the brains to marry women,

and look at what women choose to marry!

14. I guess they didn't study my ex-wife
before we got married, she was a relentless sex machine... and, it was all initiated by her. Not one time did I have to make the first move for sex. None. And, we'd often have weekends where she would come over on Friday night and we'd spend the whole weekend either in bed or in the shower together... (we'd have food delivered) I had trouble keeping up with her! Heck, even on our first date, I had to say "no" because I felt almost like I was taking advantage of her.

Of course, after we said "I do", it was like a switch flipped inside of her.
