Poll question: **How Much Weight Would You Like To Lose?**
It's summertime and we're all wearing fewer clothes, (especially those of us on the East Coast who suffered through the recent heat wave). I've been poking at my belly lately and thinking I'd like to lose a few. Anybody else?

1. I need to rebuild muscle. It weighs more than fat...
So I can walk, run, elliptical trainer, or fool around.

Since fooling around is out of the question, walking takes forever, elliptical trainer gets boring and is too easy on the joints, I'm going to run.

9. the treadmill and the south beach diet
although i think you could successfully lose weight w/o the exercise i found that i'm actually in a smaller size now then i was before at this same weight. It's taken me years to figure out tht you must exercise, i know it's not like you don't hear that all the time but it just never clicked for me.

22. You may just be at the right weight for your body.
No harm in trying to lose the last 5 lbs but your body may just be saying that it has found the right weight.

23. Most people probably aren't as extreme as I was...
But it is true, I gained 40 pounds in less than 2 months. And I didn't feel like I was eating excessively, either. And it's been REALLY hard to get it off. Of course, I sit at a computer all day.

Quitting was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but I'm still glad i did it. I just have to get this belly off!

44. the average weight gain from quitting smoking is 5 pounds...
and most people drop it within 6 months. I gained zero pounds! I quit smoking nearly two years ago.

Anyway, don't let a few pounds stop you. Gaining a few pounds is a lot healthier than inhaling poisonous smoke into your body!

GOOD LUCK!

PS> part of my success in quitting smoking included munching on carrots and other veggies, going to the gym and drinking OJ when the cravings popped up. nothing unhealthy there! you don't have to eat crap!

8. 50-60 pounds or so
Keep in mind i'm a big guy, so that seems more than it should be. When I was 18 and in the best shape of my life, I was 210 pounds. 50-60 would take me down to that, though I don't know if that's even possible. The lowest I"ve gotten, while being in good shape, as an adult was about 235 when I was around 25. I could probably match that, but it'd be tough. Still it'd be nice to be down around 200 again, though I'd have to buy all new clothes. When I was 210 pounds I had a size 32 waist. When I was 235 I had a 34...Now where I"m sitting at about 260 I have a 36-38 depending on the day.

10. I weigh 8 lbs more than I did pre-baby
It looks like more though because I carry a lot more fat and less muscle than I did, as I had a rather physical job at the time and rode my bike and walked a lot since I had no car.

So I care enough to do something about it? Honestly, not at this point in my life. Which is a bit sad I think, since I hate how I look.

16. Don't be sorry!
Underweight can be just as annoying as overweight - it's just not quite as denigrated in our society. Anyway, I've known plenty of guys who couldn't put weight on no matter how much they ate, so I know it can be a real PITA!

21. Actually
There was a period in my life where I was very overweight and nobody said a word.

I'm not underweight now but I do want to bulk up a bit but I got more grief about Loosing weight than I ever did when I was dangerously (particularly given my family history of heart problems) overweight. People are very odd about weight. Yes I know overweight people get ridiculed but there's also a strange sort of mirror to anyone eating healthy and loosing weight. I get grief for wanting to eat healthy while the rest of the extended family thinks nothing of filling up on pop-tarts and ice cream.

It's been actually quiet frustrating and even insulting at times.

Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 03:03 PM by new_beawr
but I used to weigh closer to 400. I'll be 47 in a couple of weeks.

It's funny, my BP is 120/80, resting pulse rate is around 70, Cholesterol is 170, good/bad ratio is fine, normal blood sugar, Triglycerides are 118. My treadmill test and Echo Cardiogram were "splendid" and my Doctor said that I should lose weight not because of coronary problems, but because I would enjoy less pain in my hips and knees as I get older.....I suppose I have lucky genes, I had a Great Uncle that weighed over 400 pounds, he died at age 78 of a heart attack - but then, he was a smoker.....

But, I walk 3 or 4 miles five days a week, taking about an hour to go four miles. I lift weights every other day. I eat, shall we say, heartily, but mostly organically....

52. I lost 40 pounds over a few month period
I am 5'10" and when i hit 199 i freaked out and stopped eating. Then my wife and i split.

The Despair Diet works well, but it's not too healthy.

I was at 158 when i began to put some back on.

I have been staying at 170 for 3 or 4 months. Changed my diet a bit, cut out the 4th meal before bed.

53. It's not so much a weight thing, but an appearance thing.
Unfortunately, that which would improve my appearance would be the removal of a bunch remnants of my formerly obese self. I think with that removal, I'd be at a better weight number, naturally, but I'd look more like someone who's in decent shape than I do.

All in all, though, I'm happy with things. :)
