Fundies upset that Jeff Gordon is marrying a supermodel
"I've been a stock car fan since I was in a dirt track pit crew in college. I like the feel of the sport that many call redneckish. NASCAR has changed quite a lot. Jeff Gordon marrying a supermodel bugs me.

I didn't like Jeff Gordon when he started winning. Then I heard a replay of a talk he gave at a Promise Keepers event, and I started to like him a bit. Then he cheated on Brooke and I figured his faith probably wasn't all that real. Who knows."

Are YOU upset too?

1. I wish every one of these rightwing Christian asshole fucks
would shut the hell up, and stop acting to fucking surprised whenever one of their ilk cheats on a wife or husband, has a gay relationship, gets indicted for embezzling or child porn or prostitution or other illegal activity, has children with drug/attitude problems, gets divorced (again and again), and so on and so on and so on.

Sonofabitch, they invent a world of fantasy and unrealism (that rightwing Christians are perfect, wholesome, and the best Christians ever who never do anything wrong), and spend way too much energy trying to keep the fucking thing intact because with every breath, another of those fucks is proved to be a sinner.

6. OMG that's a weird site
These people have some serious problems:

Demonic Attacks

"Over the last few months I have been demonically attacked in my dreams. It would be hard to put it into words without verbally telling you what it was like but I will do my best.

In these dreams it feels like reality and yet in my dream I question whether I am dreaming or not (got me so far?) Something will just be kinda off and then BAM a person will change into a demon or demons and leap on top of me attacking me. In fact in the first dream i had i woke up in my dream (does that makes sense?) and woke my husband up to tell him about it. He got up and came to me and then changed into a demon too and jumoed on me and I realized i was still dreaming!
I will rebuke them in my dream and cry out to Jesus but they will just mock me and continue to attack me.

I will be screaming at myself to wake up and hitting and punching my face desperately trying to get myself to wake up. When I come out of the dreams it feels like I am being sucked out of a vortex and I will awake in complete terror, hyperventilating and crying and scared out of my mind.

I have had 5 of these dreams. the first 2 were in the same night and the last 2 which was a few nights ago were in the same night. I pray every night for the blood of jesus to protect me and my mind from the enemy but every once in awhile i am still being attacked.

I guess I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what you all think of this."

Wouldn't life be easy if everything bad could be explained away by a belief in demons? (What an intellectually lazy way to live).

10. They're upset that Jeff Gordon is marrying a supermodel?
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 01:32 PM by bumblebee1
Brooke wasn't exactly chopped liver although she wasn't a supermodel. Should they be surprised if Jeff cheats on this woman too? Let's wait and see.

I was under the impression Jeff Gordon was the most hated man in NASCAR. He's not a good ole boy and he enunciates whenever he speaks.

Do they folks know who founded Promise Keepers? Former Colorado U head football coach Bill McCarthy. He didn't keep his promises to his wife and family. His daughter has two children from two of his former football players.

Yes, NASCAR has changed over the years. It's not just a sport, it's a multi billion dollar a year business.

18. Jeff Gordon is not a 'good old boy'.
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 02:34 PM by SeattleGirl
He's from California, so I guess that's makes him either a Valley Boy or a Surfer Boy, huh?

A lot of the drivers are from other areas of the country besides the South, though many of them have moved to the south, simply because that's were the hub of NASCAR racing is. It's no different than a person who wants to be a Broadway actor moving to New York or a person wanting to be a TV or movie actor moving to Hollywood. You go where the action is; you go where you have the best chance of doing what you want to do.

And yep, NASCAR is a multi-billion dollar sport. So is baseball. So is football. So is basketball. So what? And as far as a lot of drivers being fundies or whatever? I don't know if they are fundies, but it's true a lot of them are conservatives. So are a lot of baseball, football, and basketball players. So what? If I'm watching something I enjoy, I really don't care what the personal politics are of the people participating.

Jeff is hated, because a lot of people think he didn't "pay his dues". Which, if you think about it, is pretty damned stupid. If you are good at something, you're good at it. Did Ken Griffey Jr. "pay his dues"? Jeff has been racing since he was a little boy, just as lots of people in other sports played little league baseball, or Pop Warner football. When you hit the bigs, you show your stuff. If your stuff is exceptional, it's exceptional. To put someone down because they are exceptionally good at something is ridiculous. That would be like telling Griffey or any other good player to not hit so damned many home runs until they've been in the majors for a few years.

I think a lot of the crap I read about NASCAR and NASCAR drivers is nothing but stereotyping: NASCAR did originate with the moonshiners trying to outrun "Johnny Law", but as you said, it's changed a lot. Everyone who is participate in NASCAR is not a stupid local yokel; every person who likes it is not a stsupid local yokel. Lots of fans are college-educated, do not live in the south, and certainly have never married their cousins.

If you don't like NASCAR, that's cool. But pigeon-holeing people who participate or who like it is not really necessary, is it?

I've never been a NASCAR fan, but I've always been amused by the pains that NASCAR goes to in order to obscure its moonshine running origins. Gotta keep that image very WHITEbread for the fans.
I'm also amazed by the cult of personality surrounding the drivers. I mean, you can't even see those guys when they are competing, but fans go completely apeshit for their particular favorites.

45. I disagree that NASCAR tries to hide it's moonshine roots
Ever seen a program on the origins of NASCAR? They make no bones about how it started. I think that the reason it's not mentioned so much is that it's come a long way since its origins, and part of that includes appealing to a wider base than it originally did. NASCAR isn't just for good ol' boys any more.

True, but in none of those (with the possible exception of football, except it's too racially diverse for the rednecks) does rabid Southern wingnutism so permeate every aspect of the sport so as to make it the explicitly dominant culture of the whole environment. They don't refer to Bush's target audience as "NASCAR dads" for nothing.

As far as I'm concerned, it would be as unsafe for most of us here to let our views be known at a NASCAR event as it would at a Toby Keith concert or a Klan rally.

46. I don't think it's the sport itself that bangs the drum for Southern
wingnutism -- "NASCAR dads" is a political term, same as "Soccer Moms" and other such terms. NASCAR didn't come up with the NASCAR dads term; politicians and talking heads did. NASCAR is a commercial venture in many ways, same as other sports. And it is the networks that bang that drum, as it were, more so than the sport.

And as far as it being "unsafe" for me or anyone else to let our views be known at a NASCAR event, may I ask if you've ever been to a race? I have been to three of them, and essentially, politics is about the last thing people are going to talk about. That's also true of my experience in going to football games and baseball games. Sports venues are not political meet ups -- they're sporting events. People go to enjoy something they like. But just for the record, I'm not scared to air my political views at a NASCAR or any other event. I don't usually do it because, as I said, that's not why I'm there.

May I suggest that you look at your attitude about this. In fact, seems a lot of people here should do that. The stereotyping of any- and all things even vaguely related to the South just boggles my mind. If I were going to feel unsafe about expressing my views (of NASCAR, in this instance), it would be on this board, because of the viciousness of some posters that I have read over time. There are so many people who would jump all over the likes of O'Rielly, Hannity, Limbaugh, and all those who listen to/watch them (and with good reason), but cannot see that they do the very same thing about NASCAR fans, people who like country music, or any other topic they don't think is "acceptable" for people on "our side."

If stereotyping is wrong for their side, it's equally as wrong for ours.
