Lenny Kravitz: Boring
Though I will admit that his performance on the Arsenio Hall show was pretty good.

What have you done for me lately, Lenny?

Discuss.

1. Give Lenny a break
He has enough good music under his belt to join the rock-n-roll hall of fame, IMO.

2. I admit that I have little familiarity with what's on his albums
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 09:13 AM by Orrex
But I've never heard a song by him on the radio that made me think "this is sufficiently good to inspire further investigation into Mr. Kravitz's catalog."

Still, I thought that his Arsenio-era song "Mr. Cab Driver" was pretty good, for what that's worth.

5. Oh god yes the lyrics alone are just brilliant
Love is gentle as a rose
And love can conquer any war
It's time to take a stand
Brothers and sisters join hands

We got to let love rule
Let love rule

We got to let love rule
Let love rule

Love transcends all space and time
And love can make a little child smile
Can't you see this won't go wrong
But we got to be strong
We can't do it alone

We got to let love rule
Let love rule

We got to let love rule
Let love rule

____

I was born long ago
I am the chosen I'm the one
I have come to save the day
And I won't leave until I'm done
So that's why you've got to try
You've got to breathe and have some fun
Though I'm not paid I play this game
And I won't stop until I'm done

But what I really want to know is
Are you gonna go my way?
And I got to got to know

I don't know why we always cry
This we must leave and get undone
We must engage and rearrange
And turn this planet back to one
So tell me why we got to die
And kill each other one by one
We've got to hug and rub-a-dub
We've got to dance and be in love

But what I really want to know is
Are you gonna go my way?
And I got to got to know

Are you gonna go my way?
'Cause baby I got to know
Yeah

---

Let's go out
On an ocean ride
Leave all your cares
And the past behind
Let's venture out
To a deserted isle
Let's get in touch
With what is alive

Ohhh I love you
Ohhh it's wonderful
Ohhh it's magical
Let's get high
Let's get high
Let's get high
High on this feeling of love

Let's go out
On an ocean ride
We'll tell no one
We'll just go and hide
Just spread your wings
And go with the tide
Let our love be our one desire

Ohhh I love you
Ohhh it's wonderful
Ohhh it's magical
Let's get high
Let's get high
Let's get high
High on this feeling of love

Ohhh I love you
Ohhh it's wonderful
Ohhh it's magical
Let's get high
Let's get high
Let's get high
High on this feeling of love

All that junk inside that trunk?
I'ma get, get, get, get you drunk,
Get you love drunk off my hump.
What you gon' do with all that ass?
All that ass inside them jeans?
I'ma make, make, make, make you scream
Make you scream, make you scream.
What you gon' do with all that junk?
All that junk inside that trunk?
I'ma get, get, get, get you drunk,
Get you love drunk off this hump.
What you gon' do wit all that breast?
All that breast inside that shirt?
I'ma make, make, make, make you work
Make you work, work, make you work.

18. I'll tell you what he is not.... an innovator. Life is short. Why settle

for a nostalgia act when you can have the real thing. Yeah he's got a catchy few songs and has a great styist. Yeah he's no doubt a super nice guy. But give me my hard rock acidy, cruncy, spacey and cookin' be it British, Texas Trash, S.F Acid or Detroit Garaage to name a few.

4. that 'where are we going to' or whatever song confused me
I was pretty shocked by it. I always thought Lenny was cool and liberal and 'aware' or whatever, then he has that video where he wakes up in that room with 5 strung out models and they are running all over the place and he makes a point of looking like he just shot up at the end. Did I just dream the 90's happened?

10. He gets a ton of airplay in the Pittsburgh market
I hear his "cover" of American Woman almost daily on different stations, and Are You Gonna Go My Way at least as often.

But to answer your question, I don't know that he was ever relevant.

13. You're making me think of Chappelle's "Racial Draft"
in which the comedic genius of the century to date proposed to clear up the confusion surrounding mixed-race people by holding an NFL-style draft, complete with School of NFL Films theme music.

Black people had the No. 1 pick: a no-brainer, Tiger Woods. Cut to a shot of the Asian contingent looking glum and downcast, then discussion in the booth about what the Jews would do with the No. 2 pick, which centered around Madonna and her Kabbalah thing.

Then a fellow dressed like a 47th St. diamond merchant stepped up to the podium to announce the Jews' pick: Lenny Kravitz.

And the Asians? They ended up picking Wu Tang Clan...

14. I've always loved "It Ain't Over till It's Over"
Yeah, it sounds like a retro-soul single similarly to how the rest of his hits sound like retro-rock singles, but I think it's a truly beautiful song, and I never get sick of it. He may have more stuff on his albums in that vein (I just know him for his singles, and have never heard a full album by him) but I've always thought it kinda funny that the rest of his stuff sounds more Jimi Hendrix while that one sounds more... Curtis Mayfield or something. I actually like several of his singles, though. Whether he's deep or relevant or whatever, I really don't know, and he could definitely be more "original" but I think he's done some good songs. (I do hate that "American Woman" cover, though, but I'm a really big Guess Who fan so maybe I'm just defensive...)

16. He drags down the musical genius average for both Jews and Blacks...
I absolutely despise Kravitz. He is a journeyman hack. A sepia Steve Miller (except Miller is a better guitarplayer)
Kravitz manages to be both boring and ridiculous. Like a "rock star" on a sitcom episode.
