Question for Vegetarians/Vegans...
Is there anything that you used to eat that you REALLY miss now that you don't eat it anymore?

I'm kind of missing a deep dish pizza with tons of cheese.

I normally make it through with no problems but just the thought...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

2. I haven't quite been able
to give up dairy and eggs and perhaps I never will. I enjoy cheese and ice cream too much and they don't see to bother my system too much. Eggs are such a cheap and easy source of protein and in so many things that I think I would find giving them up too limiting.

As far as meat goes, I don't miss it at all. However, every once in awhile I do get a craving for shrimp or lobster. I haven't indulged it, though.

I like cooking vegetarian lasagna because even the meat-eaters seem to enjoy it, but it depends on if your guests eat dairy or not.

That's nice of you to be so accommodating. Have a happy holiday!

14. Not really a recipe Diane but...
In the frozen foods section of your local natural foods store pick up a supply of Quorn Cutlets (there are other choices but I like cutlets best). I usually just put them in the toaster oven and sometimes smear a little garlic “butter” (made with Earth Balance spread) on them. The best part is that even if your guests don’t like them (highly unlikely), I’m betting you will so you won’t be stuck with them (they taste just like chicken).

He handles everything else OK, but he says the sight and smell of ribs on a grill causes him REAL problems.

10. I still eat pizza with lots of cheese, 'cause I'm not a vegan.
I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian, so I still eat dairy. Sometimes I miss a tender steak or pork chop. When I first became a vegetarian, it was a real struggle to stay from the meat counter.

13. There are some great soy cheeses on the market now,
most of which melt rather convincingly and have a good, cheese flavour.

Give it a peruse in your local supermarket's produce section. You may be pleasantly surprised.

16. Unfortunately, most of the soy cheeses that melt aren't vegan
they contain casein, which gives them meltability.

26. Cheese slices
Tofutti is making some incredible cheese slices! They melt and everything. Even Paul likes them in a grilled cheese.

They ARE rather high in fat but I guess that's the trade off for melting.

17. Ultimate Cheeseburgers and barbeque
I'm not vegan, so I can make a reasonable substitute for both, but now and then the smell gets me, especially when I'm jogging past a barbeque joint in my neighborhood.

Funny, though, it's just the smell. If I carry the thought through to actually eating one, I get creeped out, and it kills the temptation.

18. I have another question.
I am not vegetarion (sorry) but a friend is. He considers himself vegan (no animal by products). However, he will eat fish. He says fish is not meat. He was raised Catholic so he ate fish on Fridays and continues that today.

Any insight. Do other "vegans" eat fish?

19. A little background from the Middle Ages
Medieval culture considered fish more of a fruit than an animal (different scientific classification methods, obviously). The French still call seafood "fruit of the sea." Christians weren't supposed to eat meat during Lent, and that eventually evolved into only on Fridays during Lent, but since fish weren't meat, they could still eat fish. That part of the tradition continued.

So maybe that's your friend's philosophy.

There's no controlling legal authority, so he can eat what he wants, but as for me, fish is an animal and I don't eat them. Then again, I never liked fish much, anyway.

For what it's worth.

25. Out in Cincinnati there's this joint called Skyline Chili
Best damned chili... ever. I miss the hell out of that. Other than that, I crave pizza a lot, but even before I stopped eating dairy, pizza started making me sick once my body had adjusted to healthier food.
