Where should I study abroad?
Not this year but probably the next.

Actually, this question should probably read "Where in Europe should I bum around for a year?" because my collegiate situation is such that I went in two credits short of being a full year ahead of where I "should" be (i.e. I'll be going into my junior year instead of my sophomore year in September even though it's only my second year of college), so a term abroad could conceivably consist of taking as little as two credits, even though I'll probably take more. Point is, my field of study won't really matter because those courses could be Gum Chewing 101 and Beerfest 210 and I'll still be on track for my degree.

So where should I go? I want to go to Europe and the choices looks like England, France, Spain or Italy (off the top of my head; there's probably more, but I'm too lazy to go look at the website on this slow Internet).

Hit me up, DUers! :bounce:

5. England is probably the most expensive, but it's a cool place.
I LOVED Italy, except for Venice (dirty, smelly, overpriced). I haven't been to Spain or France yet.

9. You should go to a place that interests you
Read up on the various countries and see which one appeals to you. Only you can decide that.

As a start, go to the Travel section of your nearest mega-bookstore and take a look at the Insight Guides for each country you're considering--although the photographs in those books make every country look like the most fascinating place in the world. Buy one or two books that look appealing and read them in more depth.

Then make your decision. All those countries have both fans and detractors, and it just depends on one's personality.

(I've found, for example, that people who study in Japan either absolutely love it or absolutely hate it.)

11. Sorry
After working my ass off for most of the past 46 years, having 200 college credit hours and a job that doesn't give me the satisfaction I feel I deserve, I have little ability within myself to send you off on a grand vacation.

See you in 30 years, buddy. Enjoy the days you have now, 'cause they won't last.

Actually, I wish you the best, and hope you learn something substantial from your experiences. Good luck!

14. umm...there is NO wrong answer to this question
I've been to your choices and my all time favorite is Italy but they are all incredible. I recommend studying in any country where you don't know the language. You'll pick it up in no time and that's a skill that you'll have for most of the rest of your life. :)

18. Barcelona, Spain. England is too expensive, France is.. well France
(and I live here and I love it), the Italians don't deserve you since the world cup scandal, so, for a student, you would LOVE Spain... And it's very cheap to fly from Barcelona to other cities on Easy Jet and other low cost airlines.

And spanish is very easy to learn.

29. England ridiculously expensive
son just returned after a year of study..actually came home early and emailing dissertation in. Had to live on bag of rice. Euro is much better than pound.

I spent $17 to eat at Burger King. Only see it getting worse.

19. I'd suggest Spain.
Never been there, but I know the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim influences combine to make Spain stand out culturally from the rest of Western Europe.

Hope you have a great time wherever!

If you can afford Italy, I, personally, can't imagine chosing otherwise. It's heaven.

22. Prague.
It's cheap as hell, beautiful, has a great public transportation system and is centrally located so you can take easy trips all over the place. And pretty much everyone speaks some English so there's no problems settling in. And they have the best beer in the world.

The only down side is that learning Czech is unlikely to benefit you in your future career, but it sounds like you're just looking for a good homebase to explore the rest of Europe. Oh, and the food is pretty awful unless you like pork and cabbage. A lot.

I'm studying abroad my junior year too! but I'm in high school, not college. Pick Spain, because thats where I'm thinking of going and then we could be in the SAME foreign country! Mind blowing, right?

Wow, i have had wayyy too much sugar today.

25. Do you speak any other languages?
if so, that might help narrow choices. I've had two friends spend a semester in Ireland, another one spent a semester in England and yet another friend spend a semester in Germany and I've heard all positive things about them, so I don't think you can go wrong with any choice you make

27. I went to the UK
and then went back for a masters. I loved it, and it was relevant to my coursework, but I regret not having become fluent in another language. Also, for the cultural aspects. I would go to Paris or Spain or perhaps Italy if I were you. I've had friends go to both Bologna and Madrid and loved it.
