I just received news via PM that he was tombstoned. The circumstances surrounding his absence are unimportant right now; suffice it to say, he's not gonna be around anymore and I'm sad about that. The "why" he was tombstoned is another matter for another thread by another, more eloquent DUer.
I'm speaking of Beware The Beast Man. Beast Man's good qualities were/are legion. The guy was an excellent musician, a loving husband, and witty lil' shaver with a rapier wit and a reservoir of snappy comebacks. His presence was always a reminder for me of why I liked DU (oaky, the Lounge, really) in the first place, as it (the website) attracted the best and funniest among our party, regardless of disagreements over faith, policy and other pressing matters, to come together and share a laugh, commisserate over good music, or ask for a hug. And Beast Man came through in the clutch whenever I needed these things.
I only got to hang out with him a few times in person. On his second visit, he and I and a few friends performed at a live band Karaoke gig. He got onstage, a big man, but full of energy and grace, and proceeded to barrel through Black Sabbath's "Fairies Wear Boots" like a fully loaded tank bursting through a wall of warm margiarine. It was a glorious thing, and a sight I'll always cherish.
On the way back to his hotel, We all took turns imitating Jerry Lewis. It was then that I learned for the first time that Jerry Lewis IS funny, contrary to popular belief.
I was not privy to the deets today. Apparently he managed to piss the wrong people off. To me, his plainspoken, blunt, sawed-off honesty was part of his charm, and even *I* was the focus of it a few times, which ain't nothing but a thing. This was a guy for whom the word-phrase "gruff but lovable" was coined.
Anyway, I'll miss you dude. I'm cuing up some Danzig in your honor, my friend.
(Mods - if this thread is deletable, so be it.)
