Goodbye to you my trusted friend
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 01:57 PM by Skinner
Seasons In The Sun
( Terry Jacks )

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and A B C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along.

Dude.. I love that song.

I personally like the Me First and the Gimme Gimme's version best.

3. "The Merry Minuet"
The cartoon you show is a very good take on the Kingston Trios "Merry Minuet".

"Their rioting in Africa, there's strife in Iran. What nature doesn't do to us, will be done by our fellow man"

6. The Kingston Trio

has a better version, as translated from the French by Rod McKuen.

"Good-bye, Francoise, my lovely wife. Without you I'd have had a lonely life. You cheated lots of times, but then, I forgave you in the end, though your lover was my best friend."

5. I used to like it
can't listen to it anymore with out being maudlin. Years ago a fairly good friend of mine and a couple other kids I didn't really know were killed in a car wreck, another friend of mine shot himself shortly after the funeral.
The funeral home for both funerals was the same and they played that song for both her and him. Both within a week shortly before christmas.
I was in school then, and had to get permission to skip out for the funerals - I couldn't bum a ride to Shaun's ( the girl ) and didn't yet have a liscense so I missed that one. I somehow managed to get to Danny's but my ride had to split early for some reason, everyone's car was packed Me and two other guys I barely knew had to walk downtown to a bar to find one of thier mom's ( who was dinking there at about 10 am ) to borrow her car to get to the cemetary for the burial. Left the damned car lights on - nobody had cables to jump the car - spent about an hour freezing there until someone could come back and start the car, then had to explain why I was so late getting back to school to the office. All in all an experience I never wish to repeat.

8. I love that song too--but it makes me sad
It always reminds me of the death of my favorite author, Alice Sheldon (James Tiptree, Jr.) who killed herself in the spring. So every May, I find myself humming it, thinking about her...

13. It's really by Jacques Brel...
The French title is "Le Moribond" (the dying man), and Brel's lyrics are a lot less maudlin (and somewhat sarcastic) than the translation Jacks worked from.

(Unfortunately, it seems like my copy of the Brel album is missing, so I can't post the actual lyrics.)

12. that song
really makes me want to go on a multi state rampage, metaphorically speaking...I hate it that bad.

I think a special place in hell will be reserved for Mr. Jacks, if such a place exists. He'll be right along side whoever wrote "Yummy Yummy Yummy I've Got Love in My Tummy".
