This baseball fan feels no guilt.
"Baseball is reality. Religion we made up.

I don't expect non-Mets fans to understand - and maybe it takes a viewer of the 2000 World Series debacle to understand humanity this way, but I've been remembering tonight something that's been debated for years: why did they allow Roger Clemens to chuck a broken bat shard at team captain Mike Piazza with NO retaliation?

Tonight the answer hit me: because they were civilized enough not to imagine they could be run out of town by those piece-of-shit Yankees.

But that trick only works once.

So while other fans here wring their hands at how the Mets are running away in the NL East, I observe calmly. For anyone who knows Mets history, the players are playing their roles according to strategy and the conclusion looks promising: you only have to win 11 postseason games to once again wear the title of WORLD CHAMPIONS!"

1. Great post.
I just finished reading that post in GD!

Think Omar will make any trades this week? As long as it's Livan Hernandez I'll be happy.

I'd trade Heilman and Milledge for Dontrelle though.

4. I know, but part of me says trade him to a crap market
then sign him as a FA in 3 years.

I bet we get Kazmir back when he becomes a free agent!

Speaking of, could you imagine Pedro-Glavine-Kazmir-Trachsel-Pelfrey as a rotation? *sigh*

that kid can be a big contributor in the upcoming years. I'm still pissed off about giving up Kazmir

3. This is the first time in a really long time...
that I've felt that the Mets would win it all. I was too young in 86, so I didn't get to experience that summer where they just dominated the NL. In 2000 I felt that they were just happy to make the series and if they won it would be a pleasant surprise. But this year they have all the role players and that "it factor" that all championship caliber teams possess

because our bench produces. That's what the 'it factor' is, IMO...

7. I know
I can't believe the production we've been getting out of Chavez and the leadership of Franco...Plus who would have thought Jose Valentin would be having a career year taking over for Matsui?

9. I'm the first to admit
I hated the Valentin signing, and I was screaming for them to release him when he was like 0-fer-17 in April.

I was wrong. I love the 'Stache now.

14. I like him too...
It's a shame he had that stint on the DL, it kind of threw him out of rhythm for a few weeks, but lately he's been coming around and putting up good numbers. It's a good sign for your team when your line-up is so stacked that you can put a guy like Nady 7th or 8th in the line-up

21. It should've been a good sign for San Diego
that they couldn't find a place for him to play regularly. But it didn't turn out that way. :P

I wrote a couple stories on him when he played high school ball. He hit something like .578 his senior year. I had the good fortune of doing one of the stories at a game in which he had nine RBI, including a grand slam, to win a city-wide tournament.

They had him at shortstop then, though — I think simply because they didn't have anybody else who could play short. He was no wiz with the glove, though.

But he's a cool guy - isn't he like the umpteenth Xavier Nady in his family?

28. Dunno about that
Although now that you mention it, it does seem like he told me he was Xavier Nady IV or somethin', but don't quote me.

He was a nice guy in high school, yeah — composed, easy to talk to, not like most kids that age. But I haven't seen him since then.

He's Mine.

Figuratively speaking.

Batting .335, went 2-5 tonight with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI and a HR. Nady does have one more RBI than My Barrett does, though.

Okay...carry on.

43. Yeah...Nady's got four more...
My Barrett has 11.

BUT...you have to realize that he was a naughty boy and got grounded for ten days and that cost him. If it wasn't for that, he'd be yakkin' all over the place.

Right, left and center.

:D

Nady has 14, with one more RBI than Barrett.

He's played in 72 games (252 ABs). Barrett's been in 75 (263).

10. My Twinkies are doing their dardest to help the Yankees fail this season.
If the Twins were able to pull off the wild card this season by beating both the White Sox AND the Yanks in the race, I would consider this season one of the best ever for the franchise regardless of what happened after that.

They too are winning with role players, situation hitting and stingy pitching.

But they didn't give in to it. They've now won 12 of 14 after the break and gained 7 games in the wild card race. The are indeed, for real.

40. I sometimes think that, then I remember the movie "Eight Men Out"
If someone is going to make tons of money off of baseball, I'd rather it be the players rather than owners. Although baseball desperately does need more revenue sharing and some sort of controls to prevent excessive total team salaries.

I've been to Shea twice in my life (we drove both times and remembered why it was 10 years between trips...lol, maybe we should take the train next time) Ironically enough both games were against the Marlins and we lost both times. I've seen them beat the Phillies scores of times at the Vet/Citizen's Bank though.

I watch the Yankees and will support them over any other team but the Mets and boy do I get the evil eye. They all wear their Yankees T shirts and I wear my Mets one. We are all on agreement about the Red Sox, no comment I don't want to start a war.
