18. My favorite, too.
Written by Randy Newman, of course.

It's featured on the soundtrack to "Feat & Loathing in Las Vegas"--a true time capsule featuring Perry Como & Debbie Reynolds (along with the Airplane & the Yardbirds & the Youngbloods).

freedom for the mare and her colt
freedom for the baby child

lord have mercy what you gonna do
about the people who will pray to you
they got men making laws that destroy other men
they made money god, it's a dog gone sin
oh lord
you got to help us to find a way

big ship's a sailing
slaves all chained and bound
heading for a brand new life
that someone said he up and found
lord have mercy what you gonna do
about the people who will pray to you
you know whan I look inside my mind
searching for the truth I find
oh lord you got to help us to find a way

Great song.

On the other hand, I could live quite comfortably if I never heard "Black And White" again. Nice sentiment, but treacly as can be.

30. Same Thing I Thought, Train
I think they had more #1 hits than this poll has choices. They must have had a dozen and half top 20 hits, i would guess.

In the early 70's, they were a guilty pleasure. Couldn't let those rockers i hung with (and played in the band with) know i bought TDN albums. But, buy them and listen to them, i did!

There are still some songs that wear well, 30 years later.

That settles this issue forever...

32. They picked some great songs to cover
I don't know that any of their big hits were written by any members of the band - Joy to the World was Hoyt Axton, Mama Told Me Not To Come was Randy Newman, Eli's Coming was Laura Nyro, etc. I was a huge fan as a teenybopper...in fact, they were the first concert I ever went to, at 13. I had the HUGEST crush on their lead singer, Danny whatshisname. I'm not much of a fan anymore - I prefer bands who do their own material, for the most part - but I still retain a sentimental fondness for their music.

Oh, and my favorite was Never Been to Spain.
