My husband just told me it's people like us who cause all the trouble
...in the world. He says those who speak out with a passion are the same ones who followed Hitler, the same ones who follow the likes of bin Laden and Hezbollah.

I think I'm going to have to divorce him.

2. We're the ones who opposed Hitler. His followers were the ones who
never spoke out.

10. Yes, I thought that was obvious to him. I guess not.
I'm very upset. Never mind we'd been fighting about things far closer to home before he came out with that. And it wasn't said in a moment of anger.

3. well
that may be a bit rash but remind him of the Lutheran minister that did not speak out against the Nazis and when they came for him there was no one left to speak out.

First They Came for the Jews
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Martin Niemöller (1892—1984), Protestant pastor and social activist

* Als die Nazis die Kommunisten holten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Kommunist.

Als sie die Sozialdemokraten einsperrten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Sozialdemokrat.

Als sie die Gewerkschafter holten,
habe ich nicht protestiert;
ich war ja kein Gewerkschafter.

Als sie die Juden holten,
habe ich nicht protestiert;
ich war ja kein Jude.

Als sie mich holten,
gab es keinen mehr, der protestierte.
o Translation: When the Nazis arrested the Communists,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a Communist.
When they locked up the Social Democrats,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a Social Democrat.
When they arrested the trade unionists,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a trade unionist.
When they arrested the Jews, I said nothing; after all, I was not a Jew.
When they arrested me, there was no longer anyone who could protest.
o Translation: First the Nazis came…
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
o The above quotations and translations present what some researchers believe to be the original sequence of persecutions in Niemöller's famous statement about the Nazis. Many variants and derivatives have since arisen, causing a great deal of confusion about the original, but most agree that the original statement began with mention of the Communists. The most famous and well known alterations are perhaps those beginning "First they came for the Jews" of which this is one of the more commonly encountered:
+ First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
o Another variant extends the comparisons to incude Catholics and Protestants:
+ In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me -
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

16. By that point in the discussion I was too gobsmacked to speak
I'd spent a full half hour defending my feelings for people I don't know in far-flung lands who are being killed because of madmen. And demanding to know why he can never respond with anything but "That's the way it's always been" with a shrug.

20. That's too bad.
Seems really frustrating. Talking to my grandfather is like that too. So much complacency.

Keep trying I guess.

12. Me thinks your husband is wrong on this.
I'd tell him that it is the apathetic ones like him that allow people like Hitler and Bush to come into power to begin with. Let him stick that in his pipe and smoke it while he slept on the couch for a night or two.

Standard procedure when a human is afraid. Blame the SO and ALL of their friends. Something has really upset I think.

21. At this point he'd better be afraid
He was wrong to begin with and wrong on this too. I just couldn't bear to speak to him more after he said this. It hurt a lot. He's so damned practical, he never puts himself in anyone else's shoes.

Thank you for listening and advising!
