Yuppies Check in
OK, they are keeping tabs on the Hippies in the Lounge. To balance things out, we better get a head count of Yuppies.

I really wanted to be one, but have never made enough money. Maybe next lifetime. Oh well, back to being a skanky old hippie -- it's probably more fun anyhow.

PS Don't trust anyone over 60 !

1. Checking In, As Ordered, Hawk!
We're yuppies, sort of. Both highly educated, double income (both good jobs), no kids.

But, we're disqualified for a few reasons.

1. We live beneath our means.
2. We live in a small town where yuppies aren't supposed to live.
3. We've never owned a European car. (nd, likely never will.)
4. We don't even want an SUV.
5. I still play in a rock band. (Still haven't "gone adult")
6. My wife works as a Special Ed Teacher since the work is more important that the money it pays. (OH, THE HORROR!)
7. Only about half of our friends went to college.
8. Neither of us were in a frat or sorority.
9. We both do volunteer work.

So, our Yuppieness is outward only. We really don't belong to the club.

2. Oh Come ON! I'm The Only Yuppie?!?!?
Some folks are obfuscating. There is NO WAY that my wife and i are the only yuppies here. (It is ok to be a liberal yuppie, by the way.)

3. Yuppie in training
I think you have to be 30 to qualify and I am not quite there. 'Course, I'll be a Guppie (gay yuppie).

4. "Yuppy bitch" present and accounted for, sir
At least, that's what the drunk woman at the bus stop called me. And I thought owning a five year old Ford Escort would disqualify me.

Actually, it's pretty funny to be living in a mostly Puerto Rican, low income neighborhood and have people call you that and not think it's offensive. I recently re-landscaped in back and was showing it to my neighbor, who said "I just love these yuppy-type gardens!"

5. I'm most definitely a yuppie
Live in a yuppie neighborhood; know far too much about wine; buy clothes only from specific retailers; drive 2 liberal yuppie cars; drink a lot of Starbucks/Panera/XandO coffee; can tell you the difference between a Morton's and Ruth's Chris steak; claim to read more than we watch TV (usually falsely); hang out in jazz clubs and trendy hole in the wall bars until they become popular, then decry their popularity and talk about when they were "real"; and many many other ways.

7. ex-punker yuppie the saddest kind
Angry kid with spiked hair and two tattoos. Becomes computer system administrator. Wears the business casual uniform now with a receeding hairline and sneer still in place. I am supposed to sneer btw I am a Unix System Administrator. My wife teaches Middle School.

Now, I own a Honda Civic and my wife drives the yuppie supreme vehicle a Volvo station wagon.

We live in Northern VA (yuppie central). Our house cost is outrageous but the schools are some of the best around.

I am addicted to coffee. (Prefer Caribou coffee to Starbucks)

I do not know that much about wine.

We break the mold in a couple of other ways. We don't own a huge sound system and we do NOT get 100's of digital channels. We were just never into that.

Hell I do not even own a DVD player.

Still, we have the computer and we have all the yuppie kitchen stuff beause we like to cook.

At least I work for a company that I believe in now. I got out of a company that was part of the military industrial complex and now work for a cable ISP.

8. Why ex-Punker?
I understand the haircut having to change. But, if you still have the sneer, you're not an ex-punk. You're just a punk in a different uniform.

And, BTW, the Volvo thing makes it official for you two. My wife and i have never owned a foreign car and probably never will (unless i get my hands on a great condition Miata, cheap.)

9. Very true postpunk taught us that...

The uniform does not make the punk. I do not know. I feel less punk and more geek and more geezer nowadays.

11. Aww! That's Age Not Yuppieness
I admit to being a yuppie too, but i have the disqualifiers i listed in my first post. I think you have some pretty strong disqualifiers as well.

But, feeling less punk and more geezer is an age thing. You've got less to rebel about and more to be disgusted about. One is punk the other is enlightened grumpiness.

Come, we'll be enlightened and grumpy together.

10. Let's go down the yuppie checklist...
Young - 35, check!
Urban - live in a city, check!
Professional - er, mid-level bureaucrat, half-check!

I also drive an imported luxury car (a 1994 Infiniti), dress fairly conservatively, and would most likely pass for a Republican on first viewing. So, I guess I pass for yuppie by appearances, but not quite in lifestyle.

12. And, You GOLF!!!!
You are a conservative in disguise! You must be. Yuppie, conservative Republican scum.

Wait! Do you cheat in golf?

If answer is no, then you can't be a Republican. So, you must be a liberal, yuppie scum.

13. Seduction: Come over to the Hippie Side
I am designing a Training Program for Yuppies who wish to convert to (or convert back to) being a Hippie.

I'm doing my best to keep costs under $1,000 for my weekend workshop (not including room, board, transportation, or required books).

If you would like to be on my SPAM list, please transmit your Visa Card # to me telepathically now.

So as not to be accused of Political Correctness, I am also at work on a Training Program for Hippies who wish to convert to Yuppies. More on that later.
