Some Good News - Barbaro is Doing Much Better This Morning
Yea!

http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=2191909

Do you think if we all clapped it would help?

This world is just so sucky right now that I am desparate for some good news. And I want Barbaro to get better.

1. He's heavily medicated
Problem is, will having two bad hind legs cause him to shift weight to his front legs? It's the uneven weight distribution that causes laminitis.

What makes this so difficult is that Barbaro is acting normal.

Quoting his doctor: “It’s a devastating problem in horses that nobody has a solution to.” Perhaps what makes it even more wrenching is that the horse is acting normal.

“This horse, you look at him in the stall — his ears are up, he’s bright. He’s looking around,” Richardson said. “He’s spending some time in the sling. Other times, he’s out of the sling. We are not torturing this horse.”

7. Why would anyone do that?
Breeding Practices Not Approved by The Jockey Club

Artificial Insemination: The process of depositing semen into the reproductive tract of a broodmare in order to get a broodmare in foal (pregnant) without the physical mounting by a stallion.

Cloning: Any method by which the genetic material of an unfertilized egg or an embryo is (i) removed, (ii) replaced by genetic material taken from another organism, (iii) added to with genetic material from another organism, or (iv) otherwise modified by any means in order to produce a live foal.

Embryo Transfer (Transplants): The method whereby a developing embryo or unfertilized egg is removed from its natural dam and implanted into the reproductive tract of either the natural dam or a host dam for a portion of the gestation period in order to produce a live foal.

8. Hm...I understand why cloning isn't allowed, and even IVF
(because then the embryos could be screened) but why not artificial insemination? It's the same DNA, same random chance of getting the good genes, etc., as it would be through regular mating. Any idea why this is forbidden?
