1. The last request of mine that you honored introduced me to

Helen Humes.
'Bill Bailey'

I bought the CD "Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do"
and I love it.

Now listening to it, I'm eager to hear
something new (to me) that has either
Frank Rosolino - trombone
or
Teddy Edwards - tenor sax..

I enjoy the new-to-me music I hear on your show.

:hi:

Thanks,
Ptah

7. Thanks, progmom.
Thirty years ago (yes, I'm that old) I lived in Ann Arbor.
I went to Washtenaw Community Collge on the GI Bill.
I learned a good trade (welding and machining), and
thoroughly enjoyed that part of the world.
I had never seen fireflies.
The autumn colors are spectacular.
As an elective, I took a class in ethnomusicology.
One of the perks was being in a small jazz band, I think about
twenty players. I wish I could remember the professor's name.
The highlight of the year was travelling to the Notre Dame Jazz Festival.
I actually was on stage, in a huge venue.

Any how, your weather report transports me back.

Thanks.

Lou,
Tucson, AZ

12. That very well could be.
I remember him as a man that was in his element,
very happy to be doing what he was doing.

18. if it was him...then you were very lucky
He was a tall, very large black man...would have been in his mid-30s at that point. He had a heart as big as anything. We called him "Doc" - and he was my mentor and like a second father to me.

WCC had a KICK ASS jazz band, especially for a community college. I consider myself lucky that I got to play in that band for a few years.

Doc died suddenly of a stroke on January 1, 1994. I didn't pick up my saxophone for years after that....it hurt too much.

22. Your description of him matches my memory.
Yes, it was a very LIVE band.

I'm saddened to learn of his passing.

Thanks for the Teddy Edwards.

Edit to add, if you look in the dictionary for the phrase

infectious enthusiasm, you should find his picture.

Thanks again for the stroll down memory lane.

Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 12:13 PM by Blue-Jay
I heard a recording years ago of "I Can't Get Started", and for some reason I remember that Stan Getz and Buddy Rich took turns singing it. Do you have that somewhere?

Edit: wrong tags.
