Is Firefox a good browser?
My uncle told me to use Netscape but I'm starting to not like it so much. My sister and her boyfriend use Mozilla Firefox and swear by it. What browser should I use? You know, quick...relatively few pop-ups...not as many holes as my uncle said my Internet Explorer browser has for viruses...that type of thing.

And please add how to get that browser.

Thanks from a slightly browser ignorant DUer!

1. I'd say Firefox is the best right now
Today Netscape is just Firefox and IE rolled into one; it's not really a browser on its own.

Firefox is not perfect, but IMHO the best product available. Fast, relatively secure and relatively close to standards.

There's also Seamonkey, which combines Firefox and the Thunderbird email client:

Opera has a fan community claiming it to be secure, but IMHO its security is largely based on obscurity.

2. I would say between the choices...
FireFox. I have used NetScape and it is teh suck. Full of spyware IMO.

I personlly like IE and have never had a problem with it.

4. Firefox is a very good browser.
I like Firefox because it is very customizable. Hundreds of themes and extensions for Firefox may be found HERE.

5. I use Firefox almost exclusively
Love it. The only time I use IE is for Windows Update.

6. Firefox is incredibly slow on long threads in returning from profiles
For long DU threads Firefox has a poor process of first returning from viewing an author's profile to the top of the original thread and then after a long delay returning to the specific place within the thread. With Explorer the return after reading the profile is directly to the specific place within the thread without any perceptible delay.

:)

9. Firefox is very good, but there are still features I am learning to use.
You can open an Internet Explorer window within Firefox by right clicking. It becomes a folder. That's been very helpful in this learning period.

Firefox does not completely support our Comcast.net mail. There is a toolbar that does not come up -- so I am unable to bold, underline, or highlight in that browser. That's why the IE window is so important.

One other little thing: I love to use the INSERT/OVERTYPE key. Firefox doesn't seem to know about it at all.

10. Opera is faster than Firefox, and now it's free, no ads.

Firefox is very good too. Both are easily set to kill pop-ups and other irritating advertising tricks.

Internet Explorer is an open invitation to spyware, viruses, and other nasties.

11. I just installed Opera last week, and I am very impressed.
Only 5MB upon installation (as opposed to 15MB for Firefox), also very customizeable ( Opera's "widgets" seem similar to Firefox's "extensions") and fast!

I think I'll keep both Firefox and Opera - they both seem like very good browsers.

13. I just recently came back to Firefox from Opera
I have no real complaints about Opera, it was a good solid browser.

I just like the extensions a bit more on the Firefox side.

17. I am enjoying playing around with Opera, and so far I am impressed with
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 09:21 PM by Lady Effingbroke
its speed and configurability. However, I plan on keeping Firefox as my default browser although it is somewhat slower, as I also like the extensions more.

Here are some of the Firefox extensions I am currently using:

Tabbrowser Extensions

FEBE

MR Tech Local Install

All-In-One Sidebar

CustomizeGoogle

Compact Menu

BugMeNot

Mouse Gestures

Resize Search Box

on edit: I do not use Adblock. I have used THIS CODE for a couple of years with no modification, and so far it is all I have needed.

I've got Firefox humming faster than Opera ever did.

15. Firefox is excellent. It's been my browser of choice since...
Long before it was even called Firefox. Opera is a decent browser as well, but I prefer firefox, if only for Adblock and a few other extensions.

21. Yep. But it crashes a bit too much for my linking. However, no spyware.
Like IE.

Also, the customizing you can do is almost infinite.

Firefox rocks. Just remember, it is a work in progress.
