I need a new drug
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 11:29 AM by RagingInMiami
A new pain killer, to be exact. I just had a tooth extracted and now I'm in dire pain. The dentist prescribed me Motrin 800 mg (ibuprofen) and vicodin 500 mg as well as an antibiotic, but the pain is still intense. One of those pills is also giving me a cramping stomachache.

Is there a better pain pill that I can ask my dentist to prescribe?

3. vicodin never did anything for me at all.
I did however find that Lortab works a bit better. I THINK Lortab is a stronger version of vicodin if I'm not mistaken (?)

I'm sorry your pain isn't being managed better. Get well soon.

4. Percocet
My pain killer of choice. Vicodin always seemed worthless to me.

5. Ibuprofen is rough on the stomach
You're supposed to take it with food, which isn't the easiest thing to do after dental work. That's probably what's causing the stomach ache.

8. I was thinking it was the antibiotic
But now I read on a label on the Motrin bottle that says, "if this medication upsets your stomach, take it with crackers, bread or a small meal."

But it's so hard to eat right now.

7. I figured that because it happens right after I take it
At first the dentist only wanted to give me the Motrin but I asked him for Vicodin as well. So I don't know how he will be if I ask for Percocet.

10. Take the ibuprofen with milk.
and you can take up to 800mg 4x a day for a total of 3200.

That and the vicodin should do it.

18. do you still have a liver?
wow! My doc used to prescribe 1600mg day-1 for knee swelling, but doubling that is pretty much going to make you shit out your kidneys and liver in 20 years.

19. Uh, no.
ibuprofen isn't the drug that affects your liver. That would be acetaminophen which doesn't help with swelling.

Dude, its okay.

Sorry, I was an ass for no reason. I have a gnarly cold and I'm stoned out of my mind on nyquil (yeah, acetominophen. dont say it)

Sometimes in the middle of a 16 hour day I hit DU and chat to pass the time, I dont post much - but 2008 is coming quickly and politics are slowly becoming more important again. That's why you'ver never seen me. I'm a DUer from the days of Zombywoof, NothingShocksMeAnymore and Matcom.

BTW: NSAIDs are highly corellated to hepatotoxicity, especially in those who consume ethanolic beverages. ;)

27. No worries.
Sorry you aren't feeling well. NSMA and matcom and ZW are all good folks. Well, at least NSMA and ZW. :) Kidding. I love matcom. He and I have an ongoing battle for my daughter's soul. So far, I'm winning, but she is going to be 16 in a couple of weeks.

And as far as the NSAIDs and hepatoxicity, I haven't seen anything on that. Tylenol is one thing, but I do remember hearing something a couple of years back about a POSSIBLE link. I don't know if it was ever proven, it might have been like the link between leukemia and hotdogs.

Anything I ever read about the link between ETOH and pain killers was acetaminophen, but you might have additional information that I'm unfamiliar with.

Hope you are feeling better soon!!!

:hi:

12. I believe the correct lyric is "I *want* a new drug"
I want a new drug
One that wont make me sick
One that wont make me crash my car
Or make me feel three feet thick

I want a new drug
One that wont hurt my head
One that wont make my mouth too dry
Or make my eyes too red

One that wont make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you
When Im alone with you

I want a new drug
One that wont spill
One that dont cost too much
Or come in a pill

I want a new drug
One that wont go away
One that wont keep me up all night
One that wont make me sleep all day

One that wont make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you
When Im alone with you
Im alone with you baby

I want a new drug
One that does what it should
One that wont make me feel too bad
One that wont make me feel too good

I want a new drug
One with no doubt
One that wont make me talk too much
Or make my face break out

One that wont make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you
When Im alone with you

Sorry, I don't have any actual advice...Ibuprofen helped me in a similar situation, but it's really bad for you. You could just go with some straight-up heroin or morphine. Won't really kill the pain, but you also won't really care about the pain that much anymore.

13. Clove oil
Is the best thing for tooth pain. You can even find it at CVS now, or most natural food stores stock it.

It burns like hell for about 2 minutes, but it will give you an hour of relief at least.

I'm a big fan of pharma pain killers, but none of them work well for tooth pain.

But now that they removed the tooth, do you think it would be wise to put it in the open wound?

14. You may have a dry socket.
Call your Dentist/Oral Surgeon ASAP. DO not wait!!!!

If you had a tooth extracted the scab can fall off the socket where the tooth used to be, and having that exposed to the air hurts like a MO-FO! I had that happen after I had my wisdom teeth cut out and there was nothing that cut that pain. I went back to the oral surgeon and he jammed some clove oil soaked cotton down in that hole and the pain was gone.

Good luck with it!

But now that they removed it, I'm kind of wary about putting clove oil in the open wound. But your dentist didn't see any problem with putting it in the open wound?

like the opiod derivatives.

37. Lortab is just another version of Vicodin
The active ingredient is the same (Hydrocodone, an opioid derivative).

Percocet (Oxycodone with acetaminophen) would probably do better as it is stronger.
