anyone know how much carpet + installation costs?
I've never had to replace carpet before. What we need to re-cover is a room about 14x16, a staircase with a landing, and a hall at the top of the stairs that is about 6x7.

I realize there is a huge variable in the cost of the carpet and pad; we want something very modest.

Any off-the-top-of-the head idea?

1. the variables are.... the type of carpet, the padding and whether
or not it is mostly right angles. Also, add a few bucks if you want it scotch guarded. They break it down to price per square foot installed. I once put a nice but modestly priced berber in my apt. Did the whole apt for a little over a grand. It was a super good deal and a tricky job. Your job seems small. I'd venture to guess you can find a guy to do the whole thing for.... 450. but thats just a guess.

2. hmmmm, thanks
If installation cost is included in the sq. ft. cost, perhaps I can get a rough idea by just figuring out how many sq feet I need.

3. Check your local newspaper ads and get at least 3 quotes; go to the home
stores and learn about what your options are and how your choices work with your budget.

There are a number of places that let you finance it too, but that ends up costing more in the long run.

It seems that the carpet places are mostly locally owned, which is nice.

I always hear that the big cost variable is the padding, and that the padding is the most important part of the installation, so don't get cheap on the padding!
