I got a dog! After 6 years of No-Doggieville, I HAVE A DOG!
Her name is Seneca. She's 10 years old, a Border Collie mix, and is as sweet as can be. A friend in Oklahoma has been keeping her for a little over a year until I could take her. My friend rescued Seneca from being dumped at the pound. I am her fifth owner. The first two owners she had were abusive, and one cut off her tail at mid-joint. (poor baby girl... ) She will never want, worry or be hurt ever again :)

And my apologies to my Oklahoma City DU friends here. Once I got to OKC, I realized that as much as I don't care for the Central San Joaquin Valley in CA, I was way too far from my dear grandbabies. So am back in CA after only spending 5 days in OKC, and am house hunting here. The time in OKC was mostly spent getting Seneca to the vets, getting her shots, and getting her groomed and ready to travel.

I met Seneca about eight months ago, and knew we were meant for each other. She now loves to lie with her head on my feet, loves it when I take her on car rides, and generally is getting pretty spoiled. :D

At the vet's in OKC

At motel on the way to CA

Happy in her new home!

Older dogs make great pets, I really don't like the puppy stage.

8. Am with you on ther re: older dogs
Have had several in my life, and older pets seem to know when they've got it good :D

Plus, don't have to go through that puppy training, chewing, potty time. Damn! Sure wish puppy pads were around years ago when I had my CindyRoo, a black Lab/Golden Retriever mix who lived to age 13. A real sweetie, goofy as all get out, and so very smart. But it was two years of puppy training with her! Plus she weighed in at 90 lbs and was as big as a male Lab.

Cindy about age 10

RIP CinderRoo! June, 1988-July, 2001

18. OH my! I also lived through two years of puppy training.
My lovely Diva...a gorgeous Boxer girl. Took her 18 solid months to stop peeing on my floors. And beds....and everywhere else. Grrrr.

But now..she is settled and is lovely.

Your Cinder was a good looking lady. Substantial! I love big dogs! I bet you miss her terribly.

and so do many other people whose lives she touched :)

She was so funny! Would hide one of her toys in a drawer or a an old purse, and she would open the right drawer or unzip the purse to get her toy...and she could carry three toys in her mouth at once...would drop them to sort them and make sure she had the right "fitting" order...lol

Now, I have Seneca :D She's playing, asking for lots of love and petting, and lets me check her out if she's having an itch or owie problem (had poor food over the last few years...is now on IAMS and is not itching as much at all!)

I feel fortunate to have met Seneca at this time in my life. She pretty much shows me that she KNOWS she has it made :D

I try to take her in the car at least once a day for errands she can go on with me without being left in the car for more than two minutes...if left at all.

Seems like she's always been with me...am so lucky! And she is so social! She loves meeting people and likes kids!

Seneca brings happiness wherever she goes. She's a naturally sweet dog. While driving back to CA from OK, we met many people who felt compelled to go out of their way just to meet her and give her a pat on the head while we were out on our walks or outside for her daily brushing. Seneca loved all the attention.

50. Right you are!
All but one of our dogs was an older dog that we adopted from our local shelter. The last one was a puppy, but she fit so well into our pack that it was the right thing to do. Older dogs usually come housebroken and often trained, and the ones we adopted over the years were as wonderful as any dogs could be. :) YOU are also a wonderful person for volunteering at a shelter---you give them a fighting chance. :D

51. great thread. Hi, seneca and your human
border collies have such nice faces.

i may get a Pomeranian or Maltese.

Some now say "brush the dogs teeth weekly" Necessary?

PS i favor harness over collar... seems to me a collar might sprain neck joints if an accidental pull happens. Or bruise front of throat.

just my idea, but i think footies can protect paws from burrs, glass etc.

52. Dog longevity
I too wish dogs would live longer.

Three ways , from biologists in university labs.... are being pursued for humans to live without the aging process. After a way for humans, it would i think, be applied to dogs too. DNA transplant into adult humans is a leading idea right now.

See for details, my thread in Health Forum, title "Immortality".. or look for Oscar in author column.

BTW, that Korean professor who faked human clones, was investigated and his cloning of a dog was certified as genuine. It is much harder than cloning a cat.

As for collars...Seneca has a combo cloth/choke chain. I know she would rebel against a harness, especially since she's still recovering from hot spots under her forelegs due to cheap dog food. I also chose the compbo collar so I could have control of her when we traveled back to CA. Since we were just getting to know each other, I couldn't be sure what her repsponsesw might be to strangers, kids, or other pets met while traveling. When I first put her on the leash (am using one of those 0-15 ft. length control leashes), she pulled. I immediately worked with her to heel, and she caught on quickly. Have also been working with her to stop at curbs and wait for my signal to move across a street or parking lot.
