Telephone help anyone? Getting 5-10 calls a day w/no caller?

I just had my phone reconnected after a failed attempt to go with cell service only. I have been getting 5 to 10 calls a day with nobody on the line when I answer. I tried doing a *69 to find out who is calling but a recording says I can not use that option for the number that called. It is getting frustrating. I have no known enemies/personal problems that might cause someone to harrass me. I have no outstanding debts/collectors that would be calling.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make this stop?

1. get an answering machine

and let your OGM say that you're EITHER not home, or you're screening your calls, so people should start talking or leave a message.

That way, if no one speaks, you don't even have to pick up the phone.

2. I was getting at least that many

calls a day, too. My caller ID usually said "Toll Free" and the number. I would let the machine get it, and nobody would talk, they would just hang up. Drove me nuts, and I put my number on the do-not-call list, and it has pretty much stopped.

3. That happens with autodialed calls a lot

You may have telemarketers calling.

What happens is the autodialer calls several numbers at once and the first one to pick up gets the person on the other end. The rest of the calls, if they get picked up, get a blank line. It is really annoying.

4. It's an autodialer

get your number put on a do not call list and it will stop most of them. we still get a few, in fact I just went to answer the phone and it was an autodialer.

9. I've never received a call from an autodialer.

We get about 4 marketing calls per year, with no screening, no lists of do-not-call... just a regular phone.


I conclude that autodialers must be illegal here.

5. Sign up with the Do-Not-Call registry

I just got a new number and it took me a couple days of telemarketers to realize I have to sign up again with a new number.

6. I signed up again with the do not call list.....

... I was able to get my old number back when I reactivated my phone line. I was on the do not call list before. Maybe they took me off when the line wasn't active.

7. We've been getting 5 calls per week that are wrong numbers at my place.

It's the most bizarre thing ever (our number is unlisted, no one gives it out unless we have to and...I can't remember a time we've received this many wrong numbers). 'S been going on for like a month.

8. Does your phone company offer "Privacy Manager"?

If so, it would save you the headaches.

10. I've been getting one every couple of days

I pick up, I hear a click-beep-beep-beep and nothing.

11. It was the damn "fraternal order of police"!

I was informed they can call because they are a non-profit. I told the guy I would not give one red cent to anyone who uses auto-dialers. I am off their list. Its a damn shame it takes five days to find out who is calling every hour.
