My calves both have 3-4 huge - I mean, silver dollar pancake sized - welts on them that are driving me effing nuts!

Ointments aren't working! Benadryl puts me to sleep!

1. here you go ...
Calamine lotion.
Ice packs.
Salt. With water, moisten it into a paste and apply to the bite.
Baking soda. Dissolve 1 teaspoon in a glass of water. Dip a cloth into the solution and place on the bite for 15 to 20 minutes.
Epsom salts. Dissolve 1 tablespoon in 1 quart of hot water. Chill, then apply as above.

3. Well, when they're small I just do this
I press on it as hard as I can with my thumbnail, then roatate 90 degrees and do the same thing. That usually works for me, but I don't know why. Usually some clear stuff comes out, but whether that's just water or something else I don't know.

I say, if you can't fix something with tweezers, a nail clipper and a bottle of rubbing alcohol (or after shave), then go to a doctor.

9. Works for you too, eh?
My friends see me doing it after hikes and such and think I'm nuts. But hey, keeps 'em from itching so in the end I'm not the masochist in that situation, they are.

6. Plain ammonia: daub on, repeat as often as required or use AfterBite.
Edited on Thu Jun-29-06 11:23 AM by CottonBear
AfterBite pensticks (find at drugstores, discount store, supermarket...) contain 3.5% ammonia in a natural oil base. I swear by this stuff. It actually stops the reaction and reduces the inflamation. You will not have a welt after the treatment. Of course, the ammonia works best when applied as soon as possible after the bite. I carry my penstick with me at all times. (I am a mosquito magnet.)

Caution: do not use ammonia if you've scratched the bite. :scared: It will sting.

You may need to apply the ammomnia 5 or 6 times over the first hour. Put plain ammonia (no suds or fragrance) in a small bottle and then daub onto the bites with a cotton ball or your finger. I'd highly suggest getting the AfterBite penstick ASAP.

10. A teaspoon of baking soda
with a little amount of water to thicken it. That's all we ever used to use. And if that doesn't work, a little spit and salt works too.
