BEIJING (AFP) - Xiku the chain-smoking chimpanzee has almost kicked his deadly habit thanks to the efforts of zoo keepers in China, but it has taken a beer or two to help get him through detox.

Xiku became addicted to smoking while mimicking the habits of humans during a career as a circus performer, the state-run Xinhua news agency said Friday.

By the time he was sent to a zoo in Urumqi, the capital of China's northwest Xinjiang region, in 2002, Xiku was already smoking 10 cigarettes a day

2. Hate to be persnickety, but -- chimps are apes, not monkeys.
(Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine) Apes don't have tales and include gorillas, orangutans, chimps, and bonobos.

And why would humans supply the poor thing with cigarettes in the first place?

8. Same thing I thought when I read this.
How is half a pack a day "chain smoking."

And, no, just cause a chimp quit does not mean I will. Somebody's gotta pick up the slack for all the quitters. :smoke:

9. That's a stupid thing to say.
It's really easy to make a chimp quit, just don't give him any more cigarettes. It is not as though the chimp has an ability to go out and buy itself a pack of cigarettes. With people who are in charge of watching over themselves, people can easily fail to quit smoking.
