any number having the sum of its digits subtracted will always result in a multiple of 9. :shrug:

Your number is a 2 digit number, so it can be written as 10x + y (for 42: x = 4 and y = 2). Then you are asked to subtract x and y from that, which leaves you with 10x + y - x - y = 9x, so, no matter what you picked you end up with a multiple of 9. Look at the chart and you will see that all multiples of 9 have the same symbol.

Edit: apparently way off? too tired to see.

7. Doesn't apply here.
I got three different symbols too. And some if not all of the multiples of 9 have different symbols - not the same symbol as your theory suggests.
