I have no idea what one buys for a one year old boy.

3. Buy something the parents will like.
At this point, the baby doesn't really care, but the parents do.

4. Something in a really cool box.
That's a good age for a ride-on toy or for a wagon with a built-in seat. If the parents ride bikes a bike trailer and helmet is a great thing for a kid that age.

5. Ditto the books suggestion.

Shopping for books for babies and toddlers is great fun. Try this: every time you're in a used bookstore, pick out at least one or two books in your nephew's age range or up to a year above, and just hoard them for birthdays and Christmas. I've been doing this since my godson was born (he'll be 3 next month) and it's a stone hoot to always show up for celebrations with a big pile of books for the kid. And since you're spreading the spending out over months, it doesn't feel like you're taking a big hit to the wallet.

Be selective though, lots of kids' books suck.

6. One of those pretty plastic balls they sell in the grocery store.

I know they don't cost much, but I guarantee he'll love it!

Like this, only smaller, and with more interesting designs:

19. That's great!
Of all the elaborate things my kids got for their 1st birthday, that was the one item that really grabbed their attention.

What else did you get for him?

10. Definitely some books.
Both of my kids learned to read before they were four. Ask someone at the bookstore what they would recommend.

My recommendations. Anything by Mercer Mayer, the Arthur Books. and The Coconut Tree. My kids learned how to read by four following this regiment.

For Christmas: get him The Polar Express.

16. A box
Doesn't really matter what's in it...he's going to want to play with the box. The contents will only matter later, after the box has been turned to cardboard pulp.

Weebles are good. Fisher-Price stuff. Go down the aisle and remember...1. Box, 2. Colors, 3. Noises, 4. Big and chunky.

Beyond that...if it'll make his parents crazy, it's probably something he'll like.

Good luck.

and...think Inside the box.

17. for my nieces and nephews
I usually get them one or two outfits (mostly b/c the parents appreciate it) and then one toy of appropriate age. My niece that just turned one is hot and cold on toys - if it makes a funny noise or she can hide things in a compartment, she seems to like it more. Like the other poster said - go to the toy aisle for toddlers and you will find plenty of age-appropriate toys.

At this age, you will be lucky if he actually opens the present and shows any emotion over it - you could give a card to the parents with $ for an education fund or something similar if you wanted and never worry about being the Uncle that gives boring presents.

22. Book recommendation...
Everywhere Babies

The book will be a hit w/ the parents, and your nephew will enjoy it too. My 16 month old son still loves this book, and he always finds out new things to point out. The illustrations are very good, and they show a diversity of babies and families.

It really is an "awwwwww" book. I get all weepy every time I read the last page.

we had a great plastic old fashioned truck for my son. He loved it. Not quite as fancy as some of the ones pictured. That might be a fun gift for when he's a little older.
