Favorite progressive era Elton John song.
I am listening to "Holiday Inn". I will soon follow with "Levon", "Rocket Man" and "Tiny Dancer".

What wonderful music was made when I was a lil' squirt.

What is your favorite old Elton song?

1. Burn Down The Misson
Elton John from 1970-74 was unbeatable...

3. That was some great music.
Really, his SINGING got better when he got older, but in the 70's he just had the raw edge, and the MUSIC was so fucking good, that the voice didn't matter.

:D

4. No kidding!
I have burned a few 90 minute cd's of his stuff, and there are always a few songs I would love on there that end up being left off.

5. You know, that's a good idea.
I think I might do the same, make a CD of all the EJ stuff I really like. His career has spanned so many years, I don't know if I could trim it down to 90 minutes either!

7. I stick mostly to the 70's stuff, with a couple 80's songs.
I'm Still Standing, Guess that's Why they Call it the Blues, pretty much the rest are from the time of Madman Across the Water.

That album came out the year I was born, and it was probably the best album that year.

12. That is one of my favorite album covers ever. Little CD cases just don't
do it justice!

16. Here's one I made a little while ago:
The playlist was approximately this:

Someone Saved My Life Tonight
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Rocket Man
Tiny Dancer
Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me
Philadelphia Freedom
Levon
Bennie and the Jets
Daniel
Your Song

And I think there was room for a little more. An excellent CD that I can listen to any time, at least once a day, and really never tire of.

6. Someone saved my life tonight
Although I was listening to his cover of "Pinball Wizard" tonight and enjoying it immensely.

I think after Someone saved my life, probably Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Easy for youngster to forget or not realize how completely he ruled the world of popular music, for a time.

8. I almost forgot, "Bennie and the Jets" is almost right up there, for me.
Those few songs where what my elementary school and junior high friend introduced me to Elton John with, I remember listening to these albums over at his house very well.

9. I really had to go back and discover his older stuff.
He was big in the 80's and early 90's, but his really good stuff, his progressive music, wasn't playing much.

I love to go back and discover earlier music of groups or musicians. Genesis was another example of that. I started to like them about the time "Invisible Touch" came out, and went back from there to the Gabriel era. Great stuff.

14. Rocket Man was something of a theme song for my car back in high school
Technically my mom's car, but the car of choice, when available, amongst my circle of friends, because the stereo system was the best and it was the newest car.

Anyway, Rocket Man was one of "those" songs that pretty much had to be played at least once for the night to be complete (along with Purple Haze, Axis Bold as Love, and--as a nightcapper--Love is Blindness off U2's Achtung Baby.

Good times :)

18. absolutely!
alas, the tape we had at our disposal was greatest hits (the first one), so no Tiny Dancer :(

But it did have Border Song, which on the right kind of night could be a pretty decent driving song, too :)

Also, "Your Song" is top-notch.

"Tiny Dancer"
"Levon"
"Someone Saved my Life Tonight"
"Philadelphia Freedom"
"Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"
"Bennie and the Jets"
"Candle in the Wind" (Both the Diana version and the original)
"Crocodile Rock"
"Saturday Night (Is Alright for Fighting)"
"Daniel"
"Honky Cat"
"Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"

and on, and on, and on.... I love Elton. :)

23. Bada-BOOOM, yeah!
Great song--I actually heard it on the radio once on a "Piano Man Weekend" (basically a weekend full of Elton John and Billy Joel--crazy shit!).

Crazy-awesome!
