We need to distinguish between different types of Republicans.
1. The Laissez-faire crowd - believe that tax cuts are the best thing that government can do with public finances. Restricting spending on social programmes are seen as an idea way to force the lower classes to compete for low-paid work to keep down inflation and keep business costs low. This type of Republican believes that the free market will solve all the world's problems. The GOP is the political party that is more likely to implement this economic agenda
2. Theocrats - Fundamentalists who take a very selective interpretation of the Bible, the whole "vengeful God" over the compassionate God. Christianity as based on strict gender rôles, and very limited sexual practice. Ultimately this is about power, and often the rules don't apply to some proponents of this belief who are happy to abuse, to have affairs and visit prostitutes on the side.
3. The nationalists - The flag is second only to God. America is always right, and when it is wrong it is still right.
4. The Trust fund kids - Mommy and daddy take care of everything. The trust fund kid got their first performance sports car at age 15. This type of Republican hates the Democrats for wanting to tax his unearned income as he leads a self-indulgent life-style. He'd rather blow his money on cocaine and women than pay taxes. He doesn't give a second thought to the poor, and mentally dehumanises them.
5. Neo-conservatives - Necons wish to take the "joys of the free market" to the whole world and will use war and coercion if necessary. It doesn't matter if some friend of a friend's corporations makes a no bid contract on the side, it's still good.
6. Gun freaks
7. Survivalist - Hates both parties due to the presence of the "Jew". He hates the U.N. as he believes it to be a front of a NWO. If he votes, he'll hold his nose and vote Republican, since he believes that the Democrats are communists.
8. The status seeker - Voting for the "right party" will get him a place at the country club.
9. The resentful white working-class - He has seen a drop in his status comparable to the rest of society as ethnic minorities have gradually achieved greater rights. He is very misogynist and heavily resentful of women arguing for basic equality; any woman who doesn't 'know her place' is a 'man-hating lesbian.' He is also angry about the GLBT community. He is able to get married, and he is damned if he's going to lose that exclusive right and seeing it extended to everyone. He is also extremely anti-intellectual. He'd rather believe in the Genesis creation story because it is simpler than science. He despises intelligence and it gives him a complex.
10. Those who are prone to suggestibility - To these people the whole political process is bewildering. They're not quite sure how many states there are in the U.S. or if Canada is in the union or not. They are very much influenced to the "attack ad" on television and simple messages such as "Democrats will raise taxes" and the "Democrats are traitors." They know who the President is, but they aren't sure what Congress and the state legislature is for.
Republicans can be in one of these categories or be a mixture of the above. They are certainly more unenlightened than stupid (excluding no. 10). They tend have bought the whole fundie thing, or the free-market thing, or operate on pure prejudice and laziness. To face reality is wholly undesirable and would require these Republicans to face uncomfortable truths.
