10. My brother is a republican.
He's neither evil nor stupid. He's a good guy (politics aside). I'm really not sure why he's a Republican, but I suspect that he was drawn to the Republican party because he likes to argue. You see...The rest of my family are Democrats, and his love of debate overrode his basic common sense.

He seems to view politics as some kind of sports contest. "Us versus Them" kind of shit, ya know? Still.....He's a good brother, a good dad, and a "good egg". He's always been there for me and I refuse to think of him as evil or stupid. He's just....misguided politically in my estimation.

I would take a bullet for him.

28. Maybe, maybe not.
But smarts isn't just measured by IQ. It's also how you use intelligence. If he thinks politics is just a game of debate, if he doesn't understand how our system of government works or how RW positions detrimentally effect him, his neighbors, his fellow citizens and his fellow humans, if he doesn't understand that his vote selects those who implement these positions - then by definition he IS stupid.

Of course, I'm giving him the benefit of doubt saying he's stupid. He could understand all these things perfectly - and simply not care. In that case he must be evil.

13. I think evil arises from stupidity rather than vice versa
Granted, much stupidity can arise from evil but I think it all starts as stupidity which begets evil which begets stupidity which begets evil, etc. etc. etc. all the way to having a stupid evil monkey in the White House. The Republicans I know are not evil but they are very stupid when it comes to politics though they can be very smart at other things.

14. I think those who buy totally into the laissex faire
ideas of the Republican party are not evil per se but selfish. I really think they believe that everything they have has been due to their individual effort with no help from anyone else. They forget that mommy and daddy paid for college, probably gave them money to help on a down payment on a house and knew folks to help them get that sweet first job or internship.

No one makes it totally on their own with no help from someone.

Bill Gates was born on third base but to hear the pugs tell his story you'd think he was a public school geek who was into coding and came up with Micrsoft DOS in the basement of his parents house.

15. Repubs are rigid
If its fun, don't do it.
If it involves sharing, don't do it.
If it involves change, don't do it.
If it involves sex, do int in the missionary position.
If it involves money, do it only if you get more back.
If it involves charity, be sure to get a receipt, and ask a couple other people for theirs.
** If it involves charity, make sure as many people as possible are watching.
That pretty well covers most of the basses

19. It's complicated
We need to distinguish between different types of Republicans.

1. The Laissez-faire crowd - believe that tax cuts are the best thing that government can do with public finances. Restricting spending on social programmes are seen as an idea way to force the lower classes to compete for low-paid work to keep down inflation and keep business costs low. This type of Republican believes that the free market will solve all the world's problems. The GOP is the political party that is more likely to implement this economic agenda

2. Theocrats - Fundamentalists who take a very selective interpretation of the Bible, the whole "vengeful God" over the compassionate God. Christianity as based on strict gender rôles, and very limited sexual practice. Ultimately this is about power, and often the rules don't apply to some proponents of this belief who are happy to abuse, to have affairs and visit prostitutes on the side.

3. The nationalists - The flag is second only to God. America is always right, and when it is wrong it is still right.

4. The Trust fund kids - Mommy and daddy take care of everything. The trust fund kid got their first performance sports car at age 15. This type of Republican hates the Democrats for wanting to tax his unearned income as he leads a self-indulgent life-style. He'd rather blow his money on cocaine and women than pay taxes. He doesn't give a second thought to the poor, and mentally dehumanises them.

5. Neo-conservatives - Necons wish to take the "joys of the free market" to the whole world and will use war and coercion if necessary. It doesn't matter if some friend of a friend's corporations makes a no bid contract on the side, it's still good.

6. Gun freaks

7. Survivalist - Hates both parties due to the presence of the "Jew". He hates the U.N. as he believes it to be a front of a NWO. If he votes, he'll hold his nose and vote Republican, since he believes that the Democrats are communists.

8. The status seeker - Voting for the "right party" will get him a place at the country club.

9. The resentful white working-class - He has seen a drop in his status comparable to the rest of society as ethnic minorities have gradually achieved greater rights. He is very misogynist and heavily resentful of women arguing for basic equality; any woman who doesn't 'know her place' is a 'man-hating lesbian.' He is also angry about the GLBT community. He is able to get married, and he is damned if he's going to lose that exclusive right and seeing it extended to everyone. He is also extremely anti-intellectual. He'd rather believe in the Genesis creation story because it is simpler than science. He despises intelligence and it gives him a complex.

10. Those who are prone to suggestibility - To these people the whole political process is bewildering. They're not quite sure how many states there are in the U.S. or if Canada is in the union or not. They are very much influenced to the "attack ad" on television and simple messages such as "Democrats will raise taxes" and the "Democrats are traitors." They know who the President is, but they aren't sure what Congress and the state legislature is for.

Republicans can be in one of these categories or be a mixture of the above. They are certainly more unenlightened than stupid (excluding no. 10). They tend have bought the whole fundie thing, or the free-market thing, or operate on pure prejudice and laziness. To face reality is wholly undesirable and would require these Republicans to face uncomfortable truths.

27. It's refreshing to see politics not boiled down to "they're stupid/evil"
There are a lot of reasons for a person to be Republican beyond stupidity/evilness and to write them all off as that is ignorant and counterproductive. You want to convince a person of your position on a topic, it's really fucking useful if you don't treat them as though they're stupid or evil. Find what it is about conservatism that they find appealing and try to appeal to reason and facts and try to convince them otherwise. It's funny, Democrats want the votes fo these people, but act like they're utter shit when they're not trying to get their votes. They're fucking people who just happen to hold different worldviews than we do. Calling them evil or stupid isn't going to help the left win any right-wingers over.
