I've become mostly just a lurker in the last few weeks.
I still post once in a while in the AR group, but that's about it.

I'm seriously debating whether to continue donating.

DU doesn't feel "safe" to me anymore. People have become meaner, or else meaner people have begun posting here. Maybe I've become meaner as well. I really don't know. All I know for sure is that I no longer enjoy my time here. I know Skinner regularly posts his essay about how DU is still the same as it ever was, and I respect him and the other admins. But, that is not what I've experienced.

It's still a great place to keep up on the news. But I no longer look on my fellow DUers as friends, and that really hurts. Life is too short to spend feeling hurt by people posting on a message board. I have better things to do with my time & energy. So, I take a quick glance over the site in the morning (as I was doing when I saw your post) and then move on with my day.

Good luck to you, Ladyhawk. I've read and enjoyed many of your posts. You are a sensitive, kind person, and I remember your struggles. Feel free to PM if you want to keep in contact.

It's hard to give up something that's been an intense part of my life for 5 years now... but since I've left the USA, members here tell me that my opinion is no longer valid. I was put on a spit and roasted these past few days and not one single person gave a shit.

I didn't see what happened to you, but I've seen enough to imagine it.

Giving up DU cold turkey is not possible for me. Like you said, it's been an intense part of my life almost from the very beginning (although I didn't register until 2002). LBN and even GD are great resources, but I've decided just not to post. And I take a peek into the Lounge to see if any of my old pals might be around. Once again, I try to resist posting anything though.

But when I saw Ladyhawk's post I was really moved, because I've read her posts with concern and empathy in the past. And I wanted to let her know that, well, I'm hurting as well. It's not just her. I suspect that there are many of us.......

... you and I have agreed more often than we've disagreed. And we've spent more time laughing at jerks than we've spent acting like them. This place can be motivating and energizing... but it can also be worrisome and emotionally draining. -- Sorry to see you leave, but you know what's best for you.
