Tell me something fun to do in Boston
I'll be there later this week and other than spending time with my son I have no plans for what to do.

1. What do you consider fun?
Museums are top-notch, Red Sox are in town next week and Fenway is just incomparable, shopping is first-rate, music scene is lively, restaurants are varied, interesting and excellent, other cultural offerings are top-flight, history is on parade everywhere. Depends what you like. I have two siblings and a nephew there, but haven't been lately. Will count on Bostonians to turn up shortly to give more reliable guidance.

3. Kids wouldn't like Red Sox
Been to Museum of Fine Arts(there is a chair in the collection that I helped build), Fanuil hall, Cambridge and Newbury st., want to stay away from shopping. Haven't seen any of the historical sites the rest of the family is not real big on it but could force them to do a little of the Freedom trail.

9. You should PM and ask our fellow DUer 'unhappycamper'.
That's one seriously PROUD Bostonian who knows and LOVES his town, yesirree!

He could tell you the best places to go, and sort them
according to your interests, moods, and time of day.

And he'll be happy to do it. I'd actually be surprised
if he doesn't try to buy you lunch someplace you "just hafta see".

I've never actually been to Boston, but I've had lunch
with unhappycamper...and I recommend it HIGHLY to
anyone who ever has the opportunity.

10. ummm lets see
You can go to Harvard and/or MIT. Cambridge is fun.

You can go to Cape Cod.

You can go see all the revolutionary war stuff.

You can see a game at Fenway if the BoSox are in town.

You can go to Plymouth and see Plymouth Rock and a replica of the Mayflower.

You can go to Salem and see the Witch Trials stuff.

Theres lots to do as far as tourist stuff goes.

15. The Freedom Trail, at least the part in the North End
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 09:33 AM by Gormy Cuss
The Old North Church and cemetery, then down to the Paul Revere house and lunch at an Italian restaurant
.
Take the ferry out to the new Harbor Islands park. A friend of mine was on the team that worked to make this park a reality. The Standells' famous lyric "love that dirty water" is no longer true -- the Harbor is beautiful now.

The Harvard University museums in Cambridge offer a wide variety of choices
http://www.peabody.harvard.edu/harvard_head.html

I second the recommendation to go to the Salem area. In addition to the witch trials schlock the towns have colonial era neighborhoods that are somewhat stuck in time and the Peabody Essex museum, one of the finest collections of Asian art in the country (much of it brought home by the seafarers who were part of the China trade.) The last time I was there they had a gallery that was a 15th or 16th century (?)Chinese house, shipped from China and rebuilt on their grounds. You can walk around inside the house on a tour.

16. Go see Blue Man Group at the Charles Playhouse.

http://www.blueman.com/landing/boston/index-g.php

I predict that all of you will love it and talk about it for year to come as there is something for every age and on many different levels. It will saturate your brain with as much "entertainment" information as your cranium can absorb in any given moment. Really one of those "unforgettable" performances. I've seen them in Boston and in Chicago, the Boston ensemble was better by far, IMHO (same material, but a much tighter and more polished performance). Well worth the cost of admission.

Have fun!

18. A few suggestions
Take the Red Line to Harvard Square

While in the Square, go to the Peabody Museum and check out the glass flowers. They are truly awesome.

Walk along the Esplanade in Boston. You can even rent boats and go on the Charles, if your into that.

A lot of people say the Duck Tour (a tour of Boston on amphibious vehicles that go into the Charles River, too) is fun.

If your kid is young, go to the Children's Museum or, if a little older, the Science Museum.

If you like museums, check out the Isabella Stuart Gardner museum.

If there's a baseball game, see if you can get tickets to Fenway Park. It's really a beautiful baseball field, so small it's almost cozy.
