POLL:Do any of us lounge lizards care if they take our threads off latest?


Periodically, some overly-serious person goes down to comments/suggestions and pitches a fit because the lounge threads about masturbation or whatever are pushing the "serious" flame wars in GD off the "latest" page. First of all, couldn't they just use "lobby" as their default? But that's not the point.

Personally, I couldn't give a shit if the lounge threads are displayed anywhere else on the website. I don't think most of us lounge people care either. Do you actually use the "latest" page as a reference for lounge threads? I never have. But I think Skinner thinks we actually care if they appear or not and we'll be hurt if they're removed.

So what I propose is this: We all let him know that we don't give a shit if they take the lounge threads off of "latest" and then Skinner can remove them and the overly-serious GD denizens can enlarge the stick up their...I mean, they'll be happy too.

Check in on this thread if you don't care if the lounge threads are removed from the "latest" page.

2. My 2 cents!

I love the lounge and believe me there are some warped minds here at DU who write some hilarious stuff that has me pissing my pants!

But the latest page is sometimes he first page that new folks to DU see and they might be uninterested to see stuff like "I'm wearing Green Thongs and own Sex Toys so ask me anything" type threads and may discourage some new viewers to our website.

Personally I think the lounge should NOT be on the latest page but a discovery folks can find later on after they realize what a great site the DU is.

3. Whether I'd be hurt or not isn't relevant, in my opinion

I think the demand that the Lounge be taken off the "Latest" page is petty, intolerant, elitist and detrimental to the sense of community. I'd no more give into it than I would the tantrums of a 2 year old.

I refuse to give credence to the request by acknowledging that I wouldn't be wounded. I'm not going to be sending anyone the message that it's "okay" to behave in an exclusionary manner.

I understand your point, and I think it's admirable that you stick to your principles that way. But I think it IS relevant that none of us actually CARE if the threads are on the latest page! Is it really "detrimental to the sense of community" for us to keep our masturbation to ourselves? :)

Plus, the lounge gets more traffic, and more people would see the thread. But, in reality that's neither here nor there.

Personally, I care not a whit what goes on the "Latest" page. I see both sides of the argument. But, if someone bases their decision on what DU is solely on what is on the "Latest" page, then they aren't making a fully formed opinion.

Yes there's lots of serious stuff that needs attention. Many serious posters post in both forums. So Cal Dem posts some of the silliest pictures and yet has posted some of the most profound threads in GD as well with a very keen insight.

Maybe some GD posters need the distraction of a good laugh or silliness.

I just think that the silly can help like therapy for people to cope with the serious. On the first anniversary of 9/11 the lounge page was filled with a variety of sex topics. I posted a thread asking if the talk about sex was a way of COPING with the manner in which 9/11 threatened our survival. The thread got a few dozen thoughtful responses. It was of value.

Anyway, I am not out to slam any individual in this thread.

I just notice that often people will post:

Can we eliminate post counts, it make newbies uncomfortable (nevermind that the people calling them freepers were all relatively low compared to those of us with 5 digits who don't call anyone a freeper)

Next there was ...can we debate conservatives here...I want a pet freeper.

Next there was...can we have a rule about not micking the dead?

Then there was...should we even have the loungs?
then..can we eliminate the lounge from latest?

It isn't you I buck against so much as the trend to rework the site every time an issue manifests. I feel the solution to a problem is always another problem and I have no ill will toward you. :D

When the Lounge is on a "Yak" frenzy, someone clicking on that page as a first time visitor, could see ten posts about yaks :eyes:

I do not use the latest page (I did all the time when I was a mod, to catch duplicates) but if a new person comes here looking for politics and news and there's a yak or thong fest, they could wonder if they found the wrong place..

I think the ones of us who are loungers probably do not care.

6. I think the lounge

is sort of like the underground of the underground and I like it that way. I do think it should be taken off the "latest" page actually. It's more of a place to screw around and if we're looking to get new "serious" (i.e. activists etc.) members, it might be a turn off. They will find their way here eventually anyway and can decide for themselves if they want to hang out here or not. Actually, maybe the lounge should have a warning - parental discretion advised, do not go there if you're easily offended ;-) .

I posted a thread about this in Ask an Admin. I may very well be overly serious (I kind of think it's reasonable to be serious in this day and age.

Forgive me if I don't have the personality to periodically resort to being "a nose-picking, ball-scratching, fart loving pimply faced 15 year old boy virgin who thinks it's REALLY funny when someone says the ta-tahs or chi-chis or boobies" to let off some steam. I much prefer a more mature process to get away from the political war that we are waging to save this country. But that's classified info....reserved only for adults and people who behave like civilized adults.

You are overly-serious, and no, you didn't pitch a fit, but you'll note I said "periodically some overly-serious GD poster..." What that means is that you're not the first person to bring up that issue--not by a long shot--and you won't be the last.

When you've been on this site for a while, you start to realize that nothing you think of is original, that someone has already posted about it before you, probably lots of times.

Go back and read my post, there was nothing in it that said for you to leave DU. I have said for you to leave the LOUNGE, if it bothers you so much.

And let me ask you this. How important do you think your research is on DU? It's a WEBSITE, frequented by other, regular people. Would you use DU as a reference in an important document? I wouldn't, not unless the information I got here was documented somewhere else, somewhere respected. Yeah, if someone links to harvard.edu as the basis for their post, I might use that info. But posts here are notoriously unreliable a lot of the time, and well-meaning people often post bullshit that they've heard on other websites and think is true because it's been repeated.

Lord release you from this hell? Well, DEAR, that's why I post in the Lounge. I don't find it to be hell at all. In fact, I enjoy myself quite a bit. :)
