SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- Right in the middle of finals week, an entire high school campus was virtually shut down Tuesday morning, after somebody glued classroom doors shut.
It appears to be a senior class prank gone overboard at Independence High School in San Jose.
The pranksters used super glue, as well as toothpicks in the locks. The numbers "06" were also painted on school buildings -- tell-tale signs of a class prank as graduation nears.
Principal Judy Blackerby found out early in the morning.
"I was at home writing my speech for graduation, which now I am going to change," Blackerby told KCBS Reporter Matt Bigler. "Every classroom
-- like, 180 classrooms. Very bad."
As a consequence, officials said they would cancel the annual senior class picnic, unless someone comes forward and states who pulled the prank.
"On one level I feel bad for the kids because there are so many kids who didn't do anything," Blackerby told KCBS's Bigler. "But I have to send the message that this is totally unacceptable."
As exams were delayed and students and teachers milled about this morning, maintenance crews used blow-torches to melt the glue that was squirted onto classroom locks.
Teachers and even many students were not happy about the delay in final exams.
"It's idiotic," one student told Bigler. "Yeah, those stupid seniors ruined our day, and we don't have any classrooms to work on our finals in."
