Meredith Vieria -- do you think she will succeed at the "Today" Show?
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 01:08 PM by Radio_Lady
This topic discussed today in our local paper, the Portland Oregonian, from a New York Daily news reporter, Richard Huff. The headline is pretty negative: "Vieria fearful of success as she fades from 'View'." I'm posting another article, below:

Meredith Vieira takes her seat next to Matt Lauer on NBC's Today in September, replacing Katie Couric. Vieira leaves ABC's The View this month but plans to continue hosting ABC's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Here's a national story from USA Today 5/15/06 :

By Peter Johnson, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — Meredith Vieira is up at 4 a.m. these days, even though she doesn't replace Katie Couric on NBC's Today show until September.

Vieira, 52, has been getting Couric's nightly homework packet, and she's getting used to morning-show hours. But watching Today makes Vieira, a former 60 Minutes correspondent who hosts ABC's The View and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, a little anxious.

"They ask much better questions than I would have thought of. I'll go, 'Damn it, where'd that come from?' " Vieira says over lunch. "I'm rusty."

Vieira says she doesn't intend to "fill Katie's shoes" when Couric, 49, begins anchoring The CBS Evening News in September.

Frankly, I'm kind of put off by the misspellings.

I understand that this might be a person from the UK because of the "s" for "z" swap. That's acceptable.

But he was not careful in writing the quiz. How can you be sure of the outcome? It's just for fun and I have to get ready to take care of two grandkids tomorrow. Later...

16. She's the sole breadwinner
With three kids to put through college and at least part of her husband's medical and meds bills.

I've liked her since "60 Minutes," when those sexist stuffed shirts screwed her over.

PLus... she's kinda cute, too...

17. Right. Women work for many of the same reasons men do.
That is especially true when the former breadwinner becomes ill, or dies an untimely death, as in the case of Katie Couric.

At age 52, she'd get a kick out of you calling her "cute" I'm sure!!!!

She needs our backing to make a go of it. More power to her, and to Rosie O'Donnell, who will replace her at The View.

See: http://www.shemadeit.org

The Museum of Television & Radio mounted this exhibit in 2005. I hope they continue this tradition and do it again in 2006.

"She Made It: Women Creating Television and Radio" is MT&R's three-year initiative to build a unique collection of television and radio programming that celebrates the achievements and preserves the legacy of great women writers, directors, producers, journalists, sportscasters, and executives.

Heck, I don't have a problem with Katie either. She's very intelligent. Just because she's good at banter, we label her "perky" and refuse to give her credit for her TV chops.

22. These are among the first women to do these jobs. It was not so
long ago that women were not allowed to be anchors or hosts. I worked at NBC in the 1960s when there were no women directors, producers, or editors. Let's try to remember that.

From 1957: There was only one other woman on WTVJ-TV when I did this local, live children's show.

10. I think Katie needed to move on, especially with her daughters
getting older. Fifteen years in morning television is a long time.

It will be interesting to see if she takes to the anchor desk. I don't listen to any network news these days, but millions still do.

However, I have heard that rumor, and I share the joy of going undie-free in skirts on many days of the week. Recommended by my obstetrician years ago when I had too many vaginal infections.

So, what's it to you?

21. I've Often Wondered...
What causes vaginal infections anyway? Bad hygiene? Insects?

How does going without panties help? Does it ever go away? Can it be cured with penicillin? Neosporin? Bactine?

25. This is about as good a discussion of the subject as I've seen.
http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/vaginosis/a/bacterialvagin_2.htm

Remember that wet and warm areas can become the site of both bacterial and fungal infections, as well as just plain irritated from rubbing.

Underwear, and particularly pantihose and/or polyester underpants (or pantiliners), can frequently cause problems. For some of us, even cotton panties can be problematic.

Check with your doctor for further information.

32. All women have a form of yeast.
Sometimes it goes a bit haywire.

Antibiotics, extremely tight clothing (too tight for the area to get air), stress and other things can cause it.

There are meds, both over the counter and prescription, that can bring the levels back down. It's not that big of a deal really.

Myself-I prefer to eat yogurt.

20. Here's another article about Vieria -- from the AP wire service:

Meredith Vieira preps to exit 'The View'
6/6/2006, 2:39 p.m. PT
By DAVID BAUDER
The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — When Meredith Vieira felt a moment of apprehension recently about her move to "Today," her 17-year-old son reminded her about how she had always preached about being open to the possibilities change can bring.

Ben has an ulterior motive — he wants to work at an Olympics for NBC — but Vieira took the reminder to heart.

"It might end up being a mistake, but you can't run and hide," she told The Associated Press. "You have to take some chances."

First things first: Vieira is being feted this week by her colleagues on "The View," where her last day is Friday. After nine years as the gabfest's traffic cop, she'll be replaced by Rosie O'Donnell in September. That same month, Vieira takes the chair beside Matt Lauer on "Today."

She's struggling to hold it together emotionally. Tuesday's show, presented with pictorial evidence of how her three children have grown during her time on the show, was tough.

36. its making us noticeably apathetic & stupid
concerned with triviality & entertainment instead of civics.

we know more about, & care more about, celebrities we'll never meet & who'd throw us under a bus to make money, than people we talk to & see every day.

it is a supreme time waster, and merideth viera, whom i have seen only on 'millionaire', and then for 5 seconds, is an utterly interchangeable & unimportant meat puppet.

41. Are you speaking about television? Please clarify.
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 05:01 PM by Radio_Lady
I watch selectively at my age (now 67) and having been a media personality since 1957.

I listen to non-commercial radio most of the time, or my own CD collection (now moving to MP3). Once in a while, I listen to progressive talk radio, but the commercials drive me crazy.

Also, in retirement now, I provide an hour's worth of audio programming each week to a non-commercial TV station. My guests are mostly book authors, but I discuss films and theater regularly. Read about it on the right column of my journal.

Most of the TV I watch teaches me something: The channels I watch mostly are: C-Span, Discovery, History, Public Broadcasting, Classical Arts, Public Access channels -- these are my favorites. My husband and I share some HBO likes and also the Comedy Central channel.

I watch cable TV for the quick news updates, but prefer reading it on line or in newspapers. I also watch the Weather channel. I disagree with your theory that TV is killing America. In any event, I don't think television is going away any time soon.

Here's my first job from 1957:

In peace,

Radio_Lady

40. She accused Hillary Clinton of physically abusing Bill Clinton.
On The View. She asked the question "Which well known Senator is being accused of spousal abuse?"

Then went on to claim that Hillary threw a lamp and slapped Bill Clinton.

I heard it with my own ears and saw it with my own eyes. It was right out of Faux News.

I clicked her off..permanently.

I hope she goes down is flames. She deserves it.

I won't know either way since I don't watch morning tv.
