I saw X-Men 3 today. Is it bad I found myself rooting for Magneto?
And not just because I hoped to see KKKelsey Grammar get killed?

1. LOL, I saw it this afternoon
finally. One of my sons was in and he wanted to see it again and I really had wanted to see it. I found myself rooting for Magneto too. :hi:

11. you heard wrong
most of the people saying it sucks are those who've been saying it sucks for 2 years, and weren't going to allow themselves to be wrong.

It's way better than the first movie. Atleast on par with the second. Ratner cared atleast a small degree MORE about adapting the comics than Singer, and certainly a million times more than Matthew Vaughn

19. Not me. I haven't been saying the movie sucks for two years.
And I didn't even know who Ratner or Vaughn were.

But there is no doubt that this movie sucks HARD. I liked the first two movies and wanted to like this one.

First movie since "Porky's" that I seriously considered walking out on.

13. Very pretty, doesn't hang together as well as #2
Didn't care for their version of the Phoenix plotline at all.

17. Me either
I grew up on Claremont's Phoenix saga. They should have either made it the focus of the film or not done it yet.

4. My grades on the movie
Script: D+
Acting: B-
Directing: C
Plot: C
Special effects: A-

Not as good as I thought it would be. The plot is predictable and incomplete. The script is terrible. The acting is average.

Only reason to see this is for the special effects.

5. No, that's actually the sign of a really good movie.
I can imagine exactly what you're talking about. Nothing wrong with that, at all.

7. I hope not. I haven't seen #3 yet....
...but ever since #1, I have been kinda disturbed by the
fact that MOVIE X-reality (the comic is a separate reality) just
takes it as a given that we should regard Magneto as "the bad guy"

BULLSHIT!

Give me ONE good reason that Magneto's worldview is
not a completely understandable reaction to the world as he
has experienced it!

Oh, is he "some insane paranoid madman" because he THINKS the entire
world wants to kill him and anyone like him?
Well, the movie-reality makes it very clear that he is ENTIRELY CORRECT about that!
And he has only adopted his pro-active defensive point of view
because this is the SECOND time he's seen this shiot!

He saw his family slaughtered by 'normal people' just because they were Jewish,
and now that the entire world is repeating the same shit re: mutants,
he's just doing what he can do to fight against the SECOND annihilation of "his people"
that he has experienced.

Why is he supposed to be "bad"?
Because he's lived through this scenario once before,
and now dares to stand up and say "Never again?"

IMHO, it would be a much better action-movie series if Magneto was actually
motivated by some sort of EVIL, instead of just doing exactly what most
of us would do to defend our friends and family in the same situation.

9. Magneto isn't just angry..
..he's a mutant supremacist. If you recall, he attempted to have Xavier kill every non-mutant on Earth using the "Cerebro" machine at the end of X-2. That's part of the interesting dual nature of Magneto in the comics: he's spot-on about how society treats those who are different, but at the same time, he is utterly merciless toward humanity (or was for a while).

15. Magneto should be the new icon for The Pink Pistols.

The fact that Magneto didn't kill every human civilian on The Golden Gate Bridge when he easily could have tells me that he isn't evil.

The correct thing for The X-Men to have done would have been to help Magneto destroy the "cure" without loss of lives, on the condition that Magneto promise to cease anti-human hostilities.

12. what? Magneto is a freaking moron (possible spoilers)
he was so caught up in his own 'cause' that he couldn't see what a danger he was unleashing.

The parallels everyone wants to draw to homosexuality aren't really that strong. The parallels to eugenics are much stronger, IMO.

18. It's not just homosexuality. It's a parable with layers.
But there is no doubt that they MEANT it to include references to homosexuality.

Remember the angel mutant with the wings?

One of the most creative defenses against Phelps was employed at the Millennium March in Washington DC. Phelps and his people stood on the side with their derogatory signs trying to get media attention. As we pasted, same sex couples would jump out of the march and run over and get their picture taken with Phelps and his signs as a backdrop. Thus co-opting his picking for there own sarcastic enjoyment. This infuriated Phelps and he would temporarily take down his sign to make it harder to get the picture. This of course was OK by us. I especially like this method because it uses Love to fight Hate. As strong as Hate is, Love is stronger.

22. You can't pin the X-Men to one particular civil rights allegory
they've touched on pretty much all of them, particularly those involving oppressed or hated minorities of every kind (political, racial, sexual, etc).

14. The previous two organized around MLK vs Malcolm X theme, which was
interesting.

In the previous two, they were about two guys who basically wanted the same thing (justice for the people) but had different ideas about how to go about it, and you liked both of them and wanted both to succeed.

In this one, they drop that theme and try to make Magneto completely evil, with no nuances at all. Not only is that a jarring shift in character, I think people actually like characters like Malcolm X (or appreciate the source and expression of their passions).

*spoiler*

After seeing Magneto wiggle the chess piece at the end makes me hope the cure isn't as permanent as they thought.

23. One of the weaknesses of this weak script is that the X-Men give no reason
for why we should root for them over Magneto. They come across as insufferably unfocused whiny gits for the most part.

24. I chalked that up to absence of leadership (spoilers)
with Charles gone (presumed dead) they carry on the best way they know how, and that means actively defending those who would see them normalized. Whereas should Charles have lived they may have ignored Magneto's army storming Alcatraz and concentrated on bringing Phoenix down instead. However, because Logan and the others blame Magneto for Charles' death (he was there when Phoenix reduced him to atoms and didn't try to help prevent his death) they turned on the threat perceived as more dangerous.

That's just my two cents.

he can do that to a person. :)

apart....he really kicked ass in this one. I was waiting for him to bring down a meteor or something. But the movie itself was lacking
