I will take a few moments to reflect on the sacrifices that those brave Americans made.

2. Fun fact:
More British and Canadian troops were landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day than American (73,0000 American, 61,000 British, 22,000 Canadian).

3. Yeah. That surprises the heck out of many Americans.
I was talking about the Normandy landings with a colleague once, and happened to mention the Canadian Army landings at Juno Beach, and she said: "Jeez, I didn't know Canada HAD an army!"

:eyes:

Yeah, 'cause we won the war all by ourselves with NO help from anyone else. :sarcasm:

The absolute idiocy of some people really depresses me.

I plan to commemorate today by watching the opening battle sequence from "Saving Private Ryan".

6. My uncle Tony was one of those Canadians.
The Brits on the ship that ferried them across the channel dolled out tubs full of rum to their passengers. Uncle Tony was drunk as a skunk when he hit the beach.

9. We Americans Forget . . .
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 11:03 AM by Brigid
That 22 million Russians died in WWII, 7 million in the Ukraine alone. And we wonder why the Russians weren't perfect gentlemen when they took Berlin.

8. I'll put on "Saving Private Ryan" later.
Before long, the Greatest Generation will be gone from among us. But we must not forget them. We seem to have lost something since those days; I can't quite put a finger on what it is.
