One of my neighbors (now moved) put their torn US flag in the trash.
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 05:48 PM by Kajsa
What's the correct way to dispose of it?

I couldn't stand it, I cut it loose from the pole
and put it in my car. I want to do this right.

There is something about the way the BA and Georgie
have hijacked our flag, country and Constitution that
makes me very protective of all the above.

Get this- the neighbor is a Repub.!
( This is Orange County,CA)

clarification-

The flag wasn't singled out- he left it with
a bunch of other stuff on the curb for trash pickup.

1. Bring it to a VFW or American Legion
they will do a proper flag ceremony for it.

6. Or call a local Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop.
They are taught how to dispose of it properly via ceremony that they will do once-twice a year.

Any one of them will know what to do.

37. I'm working summer camp.
Our Teen group (Girl Scouts) will be holding a ceremony. Problem is, we see flags all over town that need to be disposed of in a proper manner but no one will give them to us to dispose of.

If we don't get a flag soon our girls will not be able to hold the ceremony.

My training in flag etiquette makes me wince when I see tattered flags on display, flags left on the pole at night, etc.

Plus nobody worries too much about the tens of thousands of little flags that kids wave around during different events and where they go afterwards.

20. Symbols for things are more important than the things themselves.
You don't need a constitution, a life, safety or security if you have a flag.

This is why congress is focusing on a flag burning amendment to the constitution at the same time the country is falling into the abyss.

You have your priorities wrong.

The cloth is the thing.

30. I have my priorities wrong?
Do I really have to go into why I reject nationalism and its symbols (even such benign nationalism as this thread's subject) right now? Put very simply, since I do reject nationalism, I do so on a sliding scale: With the most benign nationalism, I view the flag as a mere piece of cloth; the less benign the nationalism, the more active my rejection of symbols such as flags. I do recognize the symbolism, I just reject it.

11. What NNNS said. Also....
you can take it to your local military base, tell them the story and tell them you want it disposed of properly.

You can also look up online what to do. I did because we got my grandad's flag from off his coffin and the whole thing of how it's folded and everything was interesting and I wanted to know all about it. Unfortunately I don't have a link, I didn't bookmark it.

39. Looking back,
I wish I had, too.

I noticed it in the trash early in the AM on trash pickup day.
Even though I was running a bit late for work, I cut it loose
and put it in my car's back seat.

When I got to work, I told them what happened.
They were glad I rescued the flag.

35. That drives me crazy! A friend of our family's flies a flag on her car.
She was visiting one day and I saw that her flag was all torn and shredded. I told her it was very disrespectful to the flag to display it like that. I then asked her to please take that flag down and get a new one.

The next time I saw her she had a new flag and thanked me.

That is one thing that annoys the shit out of me. If you have enough pride in the flag to display it, display it properly with a nice looking flag. Don't fly a tattered and torn flag.

We have lots of torn and tattered flags flying around town.

Flying them from cars really beats the crap out of them, not to
mention if it's not secured properly, the flag ends up on the road.

I have always taken pride in flying our flag to show my support for
the principles it stands for- justice, freedom, checks and balances,
equality, helping those in need,etc.

They are all Democratic values- you know, the ones the BA is trying to eradicate.

:patriot:

Later edit- this late breaking news just backs my point.

Army Manual to Skip Geneva Detainee Rule
The Pentagon's move to omit a ban on prisoner humiliation from the basic
guide to soldier conduct faces strong State Dept. opposition.
By Julian E. Barnes, Times Staff Writer
June 5, 2006

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has decided to omit from new detainee policies a key tenet of
the Geneva Convention that explicitly bans "humiliating and degrading treatment," according to
knowledgeable military officials, a step that would mark a further, potentially permanent, shift
away from strict adherence to international human rights standards.

Another of my pet peeves... flags left out in the dark while patriots busy watching FAUX news and agreeing with O'Reilly that liberals are the enemy because we dare ask questions.
